So so sorry to hear this MSD. I can't even imagine what it must have been like.

(hugs)

*fingers crossed for cooler weather*

That's such a sad loss!!! But congratulations on the show! :D I hope you fixed the heat problem with extra sprinklers. Maybe add some extra frozen watter bottles? :(

I am so very sorry for your losses, MSD. :( Please try not to beat yourself up, things happen so unexpectedly some times, and you did your very best, thinking you were prepared.

Congrats on your placings, and the new additions. :)

I was lucky and only lost a 3 week old kit. It neck was tweaking and I put it out of misery.

Aww. Poor little guy. :(

I'm glad you didn't suffer any other losses. Best of luck with the sneezers. :clover:

I feel really bad thinking of all of mine suffering and convulsing because their brains got too hot. What a terrible way to go. :(

We actually put him in a tub of water as he was in such distress.

When I went to take care of my friend's buns, I dunked all of her growouts and babies in a bucket of water. I ran a wet rag over all of the adults.

I'm glad the show went well, but the loss of the buns is disheartening.

Yes, to say the least! Poor rabbits.

Congrats on your wins, that is awesome!

Thanks! :)

Did you let Meg know? You should post on the beveren group and let everyone know. :)

Meg? I don't know a Meg... is the Beveren group a FB group? I don't "do" FaceBook because I believe Mark Zuckerberg is an Orwellian Communist.

Sometimes no matter how well we try to anticipate issues and address them so they don't materialize, something will still happen.

Yes... originally I was going to run the misters over the cages, but the package said that the best way to cool an area is to run the misters around the perimeter. Well, that obviously isn't the case here. Yesterday I strung them above the cages as originally planned. The rabbits do get wet, as does the feed. Fortunately, I feed grains so don't have a soggy mess of pellets to deal with.

Oh, MSD, I am so sorry to hear of all your losses! Especially with all you did to try to make sure they'd be safe!

Congratulations on your day at the show... what a bittersweet day!

Thanks Miss M. It was devastating, and I hope it never happens again. I thought they would be okay after my preparations. *sigh* I should have done it sooner so I was here to see the effectiveness.

At least when it's -30oC (sorry don't know what that is in Fahrenheit) I can feel fairly confident that the rabbits will handle it better than they do heat.

I was thinking the very same thing myself as I redid the configuration of the misters yesterday. :)

Try not to let your imagination run with it! :x

Thanks for that! It is WORKING! :p

I think I've got it remedied now. :)

I have 22 holes and more to come in the growout area alone. Jersey Wooly row is currently hanging on the exterior side of the fence, but I plan to move that in to the interior today to effectively utilize the misters. That will bring the number to 25, and I am going to build even more holes.

I may be able to freeze some bottles, as there is actually some empty space right now in one of our chest freezers... but I am concerned that adding 25 or more liters of water to the freezer at one time will cause the temp to rise and may allow the other contents to partially thaw. :?

I am so sorry this happened MSD.

Thanks for the condolences, all.

Hopefully between us all we will be able to prevent these types of losses in other herds.

There is a beveren facebook group, it is unofficial.

The real beveren group is a yahoo group. Meg is Meg Whitehouse- secretary of the beveren club. It isn't a very active group but alot of us get updates as far as who won at shows and issues, that sort of thing. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/beverens/

Awwww, MSD! I'm so sorry! That would be my worst bunny nightmare!

I've had one rabbit die from the heat (a couple of years ago--the nozzle on her water bottle got stuck and we didn't discover the problem until it was too late). We were gone this weekend (early Saturday to late Sunday), and I was a wee bit nervous. Thankfully, our temps are hitting only the low 90s right now, although it can be quite humid.

Thanks! I signed up. My yahoo ID (created ages ago) is MotherSheepdog... I tried to reapply as MamaSheepdog, but it wouldn't let me have that user name.

I know. I can't express how horrid it was.

I really let the little guys down. :(

All three water bottles on Jersey Wooly row were empty, even Showoff's, who was with me. I think the heat caused them to leak. I put crocks in the cages as a precaution so they will have a water source if that happens again.

You spent the day, to 1:00 in the morning, preparing them for the heat. Yes, you can look back and "shoulda, coulda, woulda", but you did what you did to the best of your ability, tried to cover all the bases... you spent considerable effort trying to protect them. :encourage:

I know... and I am an expert at the "shoulda, coulda, woulda", but I still feel I let them down.

I shoulda-coulda set the system up in advance and tested it, but I did not.

So it really is my fault that they died such horrible deaths.

My only condolence is that I will not make the same mistakes in the future... but the cost of this lesson was high, and the fact that innocent buns lost their lives to teach me is inexcusable.

Oh, MSD!!!!!!!! *HUGS* I am so sorry!!!!!! How awful!!! But you CANNOT blame yourself.

You simply can't. You set up misters and everything. There is NO way you could have known it wouldn't work as planned.

If you had done nothing or left them baking in the sun without shade, then yes I'd say it was your fault, but you did not do that! You went above and beyond for them.

Some days I think it is just a turn of bad fortune and it cannot be helped. It is still very sad though.

Congrats on the show however. :)

Sorry about the lost bunnies MSD. Don't beat yourself up too bad, hindsight is always 20/20.

Congrats on the Americans. They are an awesome breed. If they are like ours they will have a wonderful disposition and be heat tolerant as well.
