Rarely is Chez MSD left empty of humans, but today was such a day, with the highest temps of the season thus far.

I had a rabbit show to attend, the kids were going to the Evike Airsoft war, and Hubs had to pick up his dad, "Papa Doc" to move him to San Jose.

Bereft of caretakers, my rabbits were fair game for Death to stroll among them, scythe in hand.

I lost seventeen rabbits today. Three of my Beveren litter, my black Jersey Wooly doe Summit, and my Gen II blue Leonis Rex Jr buck among them.

Two were young senior does, and the rest were young juniors.

The majority were in the growout area... out of 40 rabbits in those pens, 27 remain. All of the rabbits in my main bunnybarn are fine, even the two who are due to kindle.

Knowing it was going to be 102F or above, I spent yesterday putting up shade cloth and misters for the growout area. I was up past 1 a.m. getting everything finished, and had to get up at four to get to the show in time.

My friend turned the misters on for me at around 10 a.m. The misting lines are on the east and south, with a structure on the north, and trees partially shading the area to the west. When she was here, the breeze was to the east.

Hubs and Papa Doc got home at about 4:30, at which point Hubs discovered all of the distressed and dead buns. He immediately hosed them down, and one started convulsing, so he had to dispatch it. :(

Meanwhile, the kids were having a great time at the record breaking Airsoft war, the largest event ever of its kind, and I was having a wonderful time at the show.

My Beveren buck was DQ'd in one show for his floppy ear, but took BOB in another, and my doe took BOSB. There were 15 Bevs entered, which is a HUGE showing for our area.

Two of my Rex took BOSB out of over 20 rabbits.

I also entered the raffle for what I thought was a pair of Jr. American Blues, but they split them up. I won the doe, and a little girl won the buck... so I ended up buying him from her so I could have a breeding pair. :p

I also won a wooden nest box (suitable for my JW's), which came with a very nice water bottle.

Not only that, but the young lady that I bought my Beveren buck from has decided to get out of Bevs and had a doe purchased directly from Kim Calloway that she was selling for her purchase price, and I bought her as well.

So... I lost 17 rabbits today, and gained three.

Usually when my feed bucket is lighter, I do a "happy dance"... but not today. :(

I'm so sorry, MSD. Congrats on the new additions, but man oh man...any idea why the cooling system didn't work?

So very sorry, MSD. :( What a horrible thing to come home to.

With all the precautions you took, one would have expected the rabbits to be fine. Losing so many must be devastating... but please don't blame yourself.

Came home from showing to something devastating as well. I heard of others loosing rabbits in your area. It's really a shame because you took so many precautions. Congrats for your victories, but I hope the trio and kindling does will help you repopulate soon.

Oh MSD I'm so sorry for all those losses. That a really sad thing to have happen. :( Congratulations on the wins and bunnies. Its awesome you have Am Blues now! :D

Sorry for your loss. I wonder if you could incorporate some ground pens so the rabbits could go underground when it gets real hot. I think they do that in some tropical countries.

Sorry for your loss. 17 rabbits is a significant loss. You did what you could to prevent it.

Congrats on the wins and new additions! Hopefully, they'll take the edge off.

I am so sorry for your loss. 17 rabbits at one time is a hard thing to deal with.
Congrads on the show. and new rabbits.
I am happy you got the pair of American Blues. now I know some one else who has the Blue bug. LOL

Thanks for sharing my pain, guys.

*Sigh*... I almost didn't go to the show because I was worried about them. But I thought surely that with all my work they would be safe.

I do blame myself for poor Summit- I meant to move her to an empty hole in the barn, but I was trying to get so many things done that I just didn't get to it. But her cage is hung on the opposite side of the fence that the misting line is on, so should have had water pooled on the feed bag tarps that cover it.

I just hate it when I don't act on my intuition and the worst happens as a result. :wall:

I am not sure why the system failed- other than not having a misting line running on the west side. Maybe we had a breeze to the east all day, which would be blowing the water toward the catcoop and chicken coop. :? I bought 3 extension kits for the west side on the way home yesterday, so hopefully that will remedy the issue.

The wild swings in temps are just wreaking havoc, I guess. :(

My friend that I have given some Rex to lost the surrogate doe that I gave her (Speck, the kit smasher, to be used for supervised on the lap nursing), and they are housed in her barn. My other friends who have Cals lost a bunch as well- she said they were having seizures, and her hubs had to dispatch two. :( They are away today themselves, so I am headed over to their place to take care of their rabbits, calf, goats, and horses in just a little bit.

I haven't yet emailed my other friends that were also at the show to see if they had any losses.

Maybe I will have good news when I go out to the bunnybarn- I should have popples out of my REW doe Nigella and some from Queen, the Gen II Leonis Rex.

Hopefully I get some DM Rex furred kits!

Hope springs eternal... :)

I'll get pics up of the new crew as soon as I can. They are all safely in their carriers here in the house. We actually have the AC on for the benefit of Papa Doc, which is a treat for us!

Sorry for your losses MSD. I was lucky and only lost a 3 week old kit. It neck was tweaking and I put it out of misery. I had some rabbits start showing signs of distress but we caught it in time. I don't have misters. When the fans were no longer helping we turned them off and were going from cage to cage soaking them down with a hose. My grow out pen in a chain link kennel. I put the sprinkler on to keep their area cool and turned my chickens loose to fend for themselves. I am hoping there will be no lasting effects. I have 2 adults sneezing but they are the satin pair we almost lost. We actually put him in a tub of water as he was in such distress. My monster NZW doe got loose in the yard. I am letting her be as she is having such fun. She chased the cats, chickens, dog and my 16 year old son. She is going under the house when she gets to hot.

Congrats on your wins, that is awesome! Did you let Meg know? You should post on the beveren group and let everyone know. :) 2 of my beveren does are Calloways. Mine are very sweet, the one is pushy, in your face "pet me, pet me."

So sorry about your losses though. Sometimes no matter how well we try to anticipate issues and address them so they don't materialize, something will still happen.

Oh, MSD, I am so sorry to hear of all your losses! Especially with all you did to try to make sure they'd be safe!

Congratulations on your day at the show... what a bittersweet day!

I am so sorry MSD, what a horrible thing to come home too. At least when it's -30oC (sorry don't know what that is in Fahrenheit) I can feel fairly confident that the rabbits will handle it better than they do heat.
