My breeding doe has been steadily recovering from Mastidus (sp?) and one of her teets was scabbed over, but now the part of her chest that was swollen has scabbed over. I wouldn't be worried about it, since in most cases it means that the wound is healing, but a small (maybe half inch by quarter inch) piece of the scab is peeling  It is an open wound, and looks very bad. I'm very worried about infection and don't really know what to do from here... Help? I may be able to add pictures later.

you said it is open, is it red? Filling with puss? You can put anti-biotic ointment to help keep infection away, problem with rabbits is they lick everything off. Keep a close eye and just see if it gets better or worse. Do you know how the scab came off?

let her have some powdered cinnamon in her feed daily, and use an antibiotic ointment on the open area. You can even make a good antibiotic cream by mixing powdered terramycine with Vaseline--

Yes it is open. It is also red. I don't know for sure how it started to come off. She might have been "picking" at it. That was my hunch. Like humans, when we get a scab, some of us pick at them and it makes it worse... Not quite sure though.

Thank you for the help, guys!

__________ Mon Feb 18, 2013 7:15 pm __________

I checked my doe today and her scab is peeling further and it's worrying me. She only has about 24 days until her litter is due and she needs to heal up D:

I'm really worried... I've been putting cinnamon in her feed every morning, but I'm still worried. I like things to have quick effects and I'm not seeing any...

I would use Vetericyn on it. It is available at Tractor Supply Company and feed stores. They probably have it at Petco and PetSmart also. It is expensive, but it works very well and doesn't leave a residue.

__________ Mon Feb 18, 2013 7:27 pm __________

Mastitis.

Thank you Mamasheepdog!
I'll start my quest for finding the Vetericyn...

Thanks, again, you may have just put my worries to rest :)

I want to get some Vetericyn, I just haven't been able to afford it. It's over $30, so I've been making do without.

I've been using Betadine (povidone iodine) in the meanwhile.
