Am I crazy? (I could be...).

I'm just looking through my buck's pedigree and found that his sire is a "Fawn" out of a Black buck and Black doe! How could this be true?

Could one of the "Black" grandparents have been mistaken for a black, but produce something that appeared Fawn?

Two blacks carrying non-extension would make a tort, not a fawn. I've seen some rather fawn looking torts, so maybe the breeder didn't recognize it?

My current batch of babies actually has a pair of torts that could be mistaken for fawns:

The other possibility is that one of the blacks was actually an agouti steel carrying non-extension. The chances of that really depend on what breed your working with.

If they are the french angoras I would think the possibility of steel would be much much less likely than with something like new zealands.

Yes. French Angoras.
Two things come to mind...
One, the sire of the Black Grandparent was Choc. Steel.
Two, I know the breeder admitted to have little knowledge of color, and nearly wrote my Cream doe (I got this Black buck and a Cream doe from her) as a Tort (so creams/fawns and Torts are hard for her to recognize).

I guess I don't know what to do about it... I am going to cull the buck, anyway, I guess. But it changes the litters I got out of him. I hope I can figure some of it out!

Steels are actually as common in French as any other breed that recognized steel. Someone put a gold tipped steel on the table a few weeks ago at the Ohio Mini Convention.

I had a breeder write that she got an Opal from two torts. I figured either it was a mistake, or she doesn't know her agouti colors, but there was just no way for me to fix it.

Funny! So, there's that Tort again... Maybe one of the Torts was a Fawn?

I'm just laughing, because there it was in black and white on the pedigree... but impossible.

This buck will retire, and so will my shaded does. Not just for the confusing colors, but the offspring are not growing as fast as my other doe's litters.
