Hello all

My Californian doe has developed some strange lumps inside her ears. Thinking back I did notice some blood pinpricks here a few weeks ago, which looked like either bites or perhaps she might have damaged her cage and maybe loosed a single piece of wire which caused this. I didn't think anything much of it at the time, she's always had an amazing immune system, and I just expected them to scab, heal and get better as usual.
I haven't been doing too well with my own health, and others have been helping me out with the buns, so I haven't always checked on her as regularly as I normally would, she's been one of the ones that I've left to the others to feed - and I wouldn't expect anyone else to have noticed it.

It looks like a blocked gland, except I didn't think rabbits had glands in their ears as such. I was expecting it to have puss and be soft, so I've treated it tonight by using a hot cloth to bring the blood to the area which she seemed to quite enjoy. I then finished off by treatng it with iodine, and it doesn't seem to be causing her any pain. No tooth grinding or any signs of pain when I touched them. It's in both ears, but one is worse than the other and looks like it has a bit of a scab above it.

Hoping someone might recognize this and help me to diagnose/treat it.
Perhaps @Alaska Satin have you encountered this before?

Sorry, that's a new one to me. I've had rabbits get that type of pimple-looking thing (firm, not soft or puss-filled) in their ear, but never in multiples or in both ears at once, and they always resolved on their own.

???

Do you have ticks where you are? Maybe it's her system trying to deal with bites. If she likes the warm compresses, I'd keep those up. :)

I don't know about glands in the rabbit ear, but the inside lining is often a bit waxy, so I wouldn't doubt there might be sebaceous or ceruminous glands scattered around in there.

Hopefully some else will have some better answers!

Ok, thank you so much, really appreciate your knowledge AS 😊
That is some comfort that your experience with similar things has been that they have resolved on their own. Yes, hers is hard too, which was a surprise to me as it looks like it should be soft, so perhaps it's the same thing that you've had. Hopefully it will pass in a few weeks 😊

No we don't have ticks, although we are mid summer and there is every biting flying thing around at the moment. She's one of the cleanest buns I have, so a dirty cage isn't something she gets, but it does have great air flow and only insect mesh on one side - the other side is open for good air flow, so it could be mosquitoes.

What does a sting look like on a rabbit? I am now wondering if perhaps one day she might have even had a wasp fly into her cage?

I'll give her comfrey, that always helps heal any skin-related issues, anything else recommend to be fed?
