I have a doe that I bred first week in August. She's an experienced mom, 2 yrs old. The only litter I've had her for, she built her nest about 24 hrs before kindling and pulled fur about 20 min prior.

She's also a grumpy gus when she's pregnant--I've seen it and the breeder I got her from confirmed this.

So she happily lifted for the buck and they had one successful connection. They she went Old Yeller on him and I had to separate them with a broom. Poor guy got a bloody chunk out of thigh for his troubles.

So she's been digging and acting grumpy but when I attempted to palpitate at 2 weeks, I felt nothing. That doesn't say much because I've only been at this for a few months.

I brought her to a breeder friend of mine and the doe rejected every buck (as well as both of mine), the breeder said the doe felt like she was good and pregnant.

Last night I gave her a nest box and she's haystaching like a madman but it's day 24 and not her usual pattern of behaviour.

I don't know, I'm too new at this to feel confident in a yay or a nay.

Not sure if anyone wants to weigh in but I'm feeling like this is one long, drawn out false alarm but the breeder thinks it's a yes.

Thoughts?

Sounds normal to me. I have two does who will build nests at 14 or 15 days into their pregnancies and a whole slew who build 8-10 days prior. I've had a couple does who failed to get pregnant. Those gals I gave nest boxes to since I was not sure and they promptly used them as litter boxes. I am never sure with those early builders. I always think, maybeee...its false but then here come the kits! I know boxes go in 3 days or so before kindling but I just give them to my does when they want them. They build then ignore the nest until it's baby day!

Oh forgot something. I don't know if this is common or not. Maybe others will know. My does don't really have a pattern. It seems the older they get, and the more litters they have, the earlier they will build. My first time does wait alot longer than my more experienced ones. My current litter's mom built her nest 8 days before kindling, then pulled a ton of wool, lined the nest, and then ignored it until she kindled. With her last litter, she did not make her nest until right before kindling, and pulled wool during labor. My does don't seem to follow any set patterns.

I'll second that. I observe the same thing. My more experienced does get all nesty earlier with age.

Thank you both. It's confusing because her last litter was with me and she nested only 24 hrs in advance so she's a difficult one to pin down ;)
