Hello all! I have two mini rex that have babies that are 2 weeks old now. The mom is a broken black and the father is a black otter. There are 4 babies and they are all different. One is solid black, one is broken black, one is black opal and one is black and orange. I'm pretty good with the A,B, and D genes, so the first 3 colors make sense to me. I know that it is some type of harlequin so the mom and dad must both carry the Harlequin gene (ej?). I've also been told that it might be a "torted" harlequin. What does that mean?

ej can be put with e (nonextension that causes red and torts) instead of 2 ej genes and get a harlequin. It's more common for that to happen than for 2 rabbits to both carry ej unless they are from similar breeding stock. A proper harlequin is agouti but a torted or self harlequin can be aaB*C*D*eje or ejej

Tort is not recognized with otter in ANY breeds.
Some breeds recognize tort
If an ejej or an eje rabbit is agouti [A_] then it is harleqin. If it also carries the EN for broken, then it is tri-color

No. One must carry the harli "ej" gene but the other could carry non extension "e" OR "ej". If your black otter does not have any brindling / harlequin markings in his tan areas then he does not carry "ej" but is the parent with the "e" gene
That they are self based rather than agouti based harlequins.
