When we started checking our adult rabbits for proper weight it was in the winter and we checked everyone (not weighing, just feeling along the backbone) and adjusted the feed for each individual depending on how they felt when checked. At that point we were feeding wheat grown into fodder, hay, grain (oat, wheat and sometimes BOSS) and roots (mostly potatoes, carrots, and parsnips) We had to make frequent adjustments but it was easy ot do that and to keep everyone at a reasonable weight. We weren't breeding for the coldest months.
Now in the green time when we're feeding lots of forage along with hay and grain, no roots, the weights fluctuate less. The does are either pregnant or nursing and are free fed as are the growing out kits. None of the does are getting either thin or fat. The buck is getting on the heavy side even though he's the only one not getting any grain at this time. So we'll give him a little less forage.
Thanks to all you RT folks who helped us to figure out natural feed through the seasons and taught us how easy it is to monitor condition
