So I have this young doe.
Scared of the buck. As in TERRIFIED. BUT acting very ready to breed. Somewhat cage protective, tossing hay and cage accessories around.. just like her mom when wanting to be bred.
So I tossed her in with a very gentle rescue buck I had here. In a large 4 x 4 cage set on the ground with two wood sides. strong protected and lots of room to run.
He ignores scared does until they come to him, just such a laid back fellow. Just sets and watches them run circles til they are tired.
I expected her to kindle in three days, on the 20th.
Last week she started making a nest and I thought...oops... she'll be a false positive...runs in the line, no biggie. Next day one dead kit.
Yesterday, one dead kit.
BOTH kits look full-term so I'm kinda scratching my head.
Today she kindled three big kits. They look like the rescue buck at this time.. and HIS colour since I don't have blues running in my herd.
So I'm just scratching my head wondering how this managed to work out.
she wasn't bred to any of my bucks as she simply didn't let the bucks get close to her (I don't allow frightened young does rip around wire cages, too much potential for damage). and breeding through the wire can't happen as six inches separates all cages.
So just saying, if you find a dead kit it doesn't mean the litter is lost or the breeding is wasted....just leave the nestbox alone and you never know what you will find.

-- Fri Sep 18, 2015 5:18 pm --

and she had another one today.... DOA.. but this is the ODDEST litter I've ever had...
