This morning, one of our bucks, Davidson, was dead. The only thing we can figure out is that he had a reaction to the PenG we gave him. He had two doses, 1/10cc per lb.

We discovered a doe with vent disease. Since we didn't know how long she had it, we decided to treat all the rabbits, Davidson included. He didn't react well when we gave him the shots, kinda spazzed out a little. Now he's dead. What the heck?? Was it an allergic reaction? Has anyone had this happen?

We're so sad. He was such a great rabbit and was a great breeder for us. His litters were always healthy and sweet and docile. It's definitely a loss for us.

Could be an allergic reaction-- are you sure nothing got directly into the blood vessels-- because death is a sure thing when that happens, as well. even SubQ, I Aspirate to make sure!!!

I've given Penicillin to my rabbits, roughly 1cc each, maybe a tad more. Eight to 11.5 pound rabbits. They were on pasture, none had any issues.

Can you feel any bumps on his body at all? Swelling at injection site? Did he stop eating/drinking, acting weird? Mine kicked at me when I put in the needle, but nothing else after the shot was done.

Did you let the vial reach room temperature before mixing and drawing out the dose? Did you check to make sure you didn't hit a vein or muscle?

Did anything else at all change around this time? Did you pen him up, at least check the injection site from within?

I'm so sorry for the loss of your buck, Ollitos!

It is certainly possible that he reacted badly to the antibiotic. There are some types of rabbits that are especially sensitive, but even if he was not one of them, he could still have had a sensitivity.
