I'm wondering if Humphrey my Netherland Dwarf is breeding quality. Here are some pictures of him. He is 900gms which is 1.98 lbs (do you think he is purebred and a true dwarf?). He's about 1 year old now. He does sit up but when I take photos he flattens down and won't sit up. Tell me if I need to take more pictures at a different angle.

He is posed badly, but he looks very long in body and flat in the hindquarters.

I like his face and ears. He is very sunburnt and needs to molt to get into a show coat.

That being said, I have no idea how they are shown in New Zealand, or the body type available there. My comments were meant from the USA standard.

He does appear to be true Netherland Dwarf. The bug eyes give it away.

Thanks for your critique- I guess the flat in hind quarters long body might be why its so hard to get him to sit up like the ones I see in photos. There are a few people here who have some nice Nethies that win awards in the national shows that I know are really nice quality, but they don't come in many colors and you really have to know someone to get one, and go to the shows— which I am trying to do.

I agree with the above critique. Although against ND standard, I find this head too snipey, and his ears might be too long....they would need to be measured. His shoulders are also long, so he won't ever pose right.

A ND or a Holland with the right conformation will be able to sit upright naturally. ;)

I've never understood how people can tell if the shoulders are good-- or too long or weak-

Thanks for the critique, so I really should keep looking out for another if I want a nicer type.

I'm no expert, but he looks like he has pinched hindquarters also. When you flip him over, his rear hocks should be parallel, not "V" shaped.

I second the pinched hindquarters thing...I had several breeders warn me that it is a nightmare to "breed out" of a line so best to start with good hindquarters and back legs that when flipped look like fluffy equals signs.

Will check his hindquarters soon... might take a photo.

I think his whole body is sort of narrow- but I think his feet don't splay out- but will check. In the photos I posted above - he was feeling a bit off balance because i kept trying to slide him to the middle of the stool and get him to sit- so his feet where in awkward positions I think.

reading the breed standard for the ND (even if it is just the US one) is a good start for figuring out if he is breeding quality.

if you do not understand something you can always message the association or a local breeder.
