when I called Pfau Feeds they were all freaked out. Gonna be some butt chewin' going on tomorrow! you can order your feed custom made from them, also.

You can get custom pellets from many local feed mills. Any that can do extruded feed. The problem is you have to buy a minimum amount and that is often quite a bit. We might even be talking in tons so you need a lot of rabbits and a year's worth of feed at once or find someone to split with if you want custom feed. Custom grain mixes any mill could do although some won't and usually you don't need to buy as much. We usually did a truckbed load for our custom sweet feed blend for the horses when we had more of them.

In this case, Country Acres is made and sold by Purina feed mills. For some of us, that is a disqualifying factor right off the bat.

I gotta admit that I've read the ingredient labels on Country Acres a couple of times. I just wasn't impressed with what I saw, and as I've compared it to a local brand called Prime Quality, they look awfully close to being the same. Thing is that I used Prime Quality at one time on my first go-round with raising rabbits, and the results were very marginal. That leaves me a little gun shy about getting back on that merry-go-round.

If you're using this feed and it works for your program, who am I or anyone else to say it's not a good feed to use, but I prefer certain things to stare out at me in the first 5-7 ingredients on the list. When they're as vague as Prime Quality's and Country Acres' tend to be, I'm going to keep on looking.

While it's certainly more expensive to do so, I'd personally stick with Manna Pro Sho before I'd switch to Country Acres, but the 2 things the decision should come down to IMHO are:

1-Best quality feed available in your area
2-Being able to buy the feed on a regular basis

Those 2 may sound like one and the same, but they're quite different.

__________ Tue Mar 27, 2012 6:36 pm __________

The same thing happened to me on the MannaPro site too. I haven't checked it recently, but when I had the bags with corn in them, the ingredients were the same for whatever product I clicked on.

If you look at the chart illustrations currently on their site, you'll see that Gro and Pro formulas don't contain chelated minerals (aids in enhancing reproduction, coat and bone formation), Manna E (improves digestion), and Papaya (reduction of hairballs). Also, Pro does not contain Yucca, which aids in reducing odors. The only one of their feeds which contains all of the above is their Sho forumla.

They are all similar in some ways, but they're all different.

Thanks, SR. Hubs went to town today and exchanged the Country Acres for MannaProSho.

BBco., MannaPro is $19.29 for 50 pounds, the Country Acres was $14.99.

MSD, I recently switched back to Pen Pals but have seen a bit of a dropoff in the appearance of some of my herd. I'm likely going to switch back to Sho next month when I'm down to my last 100 lbs and just leave them on it.

I honestly think every feed has a down side, but I've seemed to experience less of it with Manna Pro than with any other feed I've used around here. Yeah, my feed bill will go back up the 25% I thought I was saving by switching back to Pen Pals, but I was honestly pleased with how well they seemed to perform on the show table when they were on it.

That same ingredient listing you mentioned? Take a look at the Nutrena NatureWise listings for their Performance and Premium feeds sometime. They ARE identical.

I have used this feed ... I don't love it. My rabbits don't love it, in fact some will barely touch it. It is in my opinion mediocre feed, and I have had bags freshly opened, that were full of mold. I only use it if I absolutely have to. The price where I can get it is about 15 dollars for a bag. The Pfaus brand I buy costs 22. I gladly get the Pfaus over the Country acres any day. To get any other brand of pellets I have to drive 30 miles.

I think Country Acres was the first kind I bought that had the clumps in it. If it is a yellow bag then that was it. It was wet on bottom from storage, so most likely the store where I got it, but they lay the feed on the side, so who knows.

I have started feeding the manna Pro formula feed but am likely going to put the Woolys on Manna Sho.

I don't feed pellets anymore, just hay, greens, and my grain mix. It will be interesting to see how the Woolys do on it.

Are you putting the woolys on pellets or grains? Who are you looking into pellets for?

I did grains for a while and then I switched to manna pro when the Woolys came. I was worried that I wouldn't get a nice finish for show on just grains. Now I think I want the woolys on manna Sho. :?

I used to do a custom mix for the horses because I am never quite satisfied with premade feeds.

I'm not. This thread is from March. :)

I'm not sure either, but all of my Rex look good. I am going to feed them grains and see how it goes.
