I've been toying with the whole colony idea, maybe one day....but, what do you do in the winter? We get 3-4 ft. of snow on the ground all winter, does that affect the rabbits to have snow and frozen ground? Would you have to let me them dig underground? Obviously you would have a roof, like most of the colony set ups I've seen on this forum. Curious???

If you start your colony in spring and allow them to dig, by fall they should have a well-established warren. They can continue to dig below the frost line. You might have to assist them by digging out an entrance after a huge snowfall, but I do know of an outdoor colony in the snow belt area of Ontario. The rabbits broke its boundaries and went feral years ago. That colony has existed for about 50 years and for many of those years had no human assistance. I'm not advocating this... just pointing out that the snowfall may not be such a problem. You would need to have a weather-proof feeding station.

There is an interesting blog about an outdoor colony in West Virginia. They don't get the amount of snow you get, but you may still be able to learn from their experiences:
