Coccidia

We purchased 2 flemish giant rabbit youngsters.

They were and still are way under weight.

One was sluggish so we bought some pedialite, removed pellets and enured they had clean hay.

He got a bit better but still a bit off,wife took both to a rabbit friendly Vet who did a poop sample. They say the both have the worst case of Coccida they ever saw.

We adminstered their second set of meds this morning.

Both seem to be better but I am wondering if others had this trouble in the past and how fast they recovered.

We are told we need to medicate 2 times a day for 7 days then bring them back for a follow up.

I haven't had to treat for coccidia, but I do know that it is important to clean the cage wire or whatever type of flooring you are using with ammonia. It is the only thing that will kill the eggs to prevent reinfection.

If you can do it daily during treatment, that would be great. Remove the rabbits and mist the flooring with straight ammonia, allow to dry, then rinse with clean water. Make sure they cannot contaminate their feed or water with feces.

Welcome to RT Puget, I sure do miss living in Washington, I spent some time there myself in Westport running Salmon charter boats, beautifull place.

what exactly did the vet tell you to treat them with?

They have 3 meds, not sure their names. One is a pain killer, 1 is a kills the Coccida and the other for gas, at least thats my understanding.

Wife is able to change their bedding and hay once or twice a day.

Poor bunnies came from more or less a backyard breeder.

Wife says their pellets and cage were wet and nasty.

They are 8 and 10 weeks old. biggest is 2 lbs and smallest barely over 1 pound. Am told they should both be 4 or more lbs each by now.

They are happy and bonded with each other. We will wait a few months and then spay and neuter them.
