So I was looking at pedigrees last night, trying to figure out what my hollands will produce as far as colour goes.

Noticed that my doe, who is orange, has a chocolate parent and a chocolate tri parent.

That would make her a chocolate based orange - Aa bb C_ D_ ee (or possibly ej, and the chocolate on her tri is in the white of her broken).

How does chocolate based orange differ from black based orange, visually? Can you look at them and see a difference? Or is the only way to know via pedigree?

A chocolate rabbit will not be able to chemically produce black pigment anywhere - not nails, not whiskers, not fringe.

Unfortunately oranges are non extension so don't have much black so telling apart black based, chocolate based and blue based "fawns" (A_ __ __ __ ee ) is tricky but much easier in Harli's and tri's :)

So the phenotype is the same then? That sucks. I don't know if my buck carries chocolate or not(it is on his pedigree) so I guess we'll find out when they breed.

Without using the (they could possibly carry them) genes, I should get black, agouti, tort and orange, in broken and solid.

Oscar is Blue, and as per his pedigree is aa B(b) C(cchl or something, sire was Sable Point) dd Ee
Tamara is Broken Orange, and as per her pedigree is Aa bb C_ D(d) ee

If Oscar got chocolate, and Tamara got dilute, I could get half the colours possible.

GROW FASTER LITTLE HOLLANDS!!!

Tamara will be 20wks mid-July.

A lot of chocolate based rabbits with have a reddish eye cast.

Chocolate based oranges or reds are nice because it helps hide any smuttyness they might have. Makes everything seems more...even colored.
So...black smut...not a chocolate.

Whoops, my post should say she's broken and that hides the SMUTT.

I'm starting to get pretty excited about the hollands, since Tamara's ears are starting to lop(I was pretty sure they weren't going to.)

IF she got dilute and he got chocolate(they each have them in grands or great grands, so it's possible)...

Oh man, the rainbows in those litters.

black, agouti, tort, orange
blue, opal, blue tort, cream
chocolate, chocolate agouti, chocolate tort
Lilac, lilac agouti, lilac tort.

All in broken or solid.

Well, I did tell my friend I wanted a pair that would give me rainbows!!
