I do travel a bit to reach some of them, but nothing like the distances that might be encountered in the west. The Charleston show was a 4.5 hr trip, but going down it was 6 hrs due to traffic. I guess for me, 1.5 to 2 hrs is about the average distance to travel, some shorter, some longer. A lot depends upon the show / and number of shows. I'll travel farther for a triple, etc., at least I feel I'm getting more bang for the buck.
Yeah, I hear you. When I was a youth exhibitor, I had 3 shows a year without ever leaving my hometown between 2 local club shows and the county fair and had another 3-8 shows per year within the state when the other local clubs formed and began putting on shows. It wasn't until I was a junior in HS that I ever physically attended an out-of-state show. I never ever really needed to up to that point, with 10 local club shows, 1 county fair, and 1 state fair, but I'd be lying to you folks if I told you it wasn't darn fun to attend that first OOS show in Burleson, TN. Travelling up there for the day was kind of like going to the moon for me.
Would to God that we'd have a couple of legit clubs in this state, but the problem is that nobody wants to be involved with starting up a local club. Contact other breeders to try and gauge their interest in forming a local club and either you get no response, or you get a tapdancing act. Oh sure, they'd attend club shows, but get involved with chartering a club and helping to put on a show? Fat chance.
