I know that New Zealands come in just about every color of the rabbit rainbow but the three castor kits in the nest box were a COMPLETE surprise to me!

Doe is red eyed white and buck is red with a gold tipped steel sire.

Has anyone else seen a castor New Zealand?

Castor is a Rex colour term and in non Rex it is called Chestnut.

I am thinking they might be fawns (genetically like the sire but lacking the recessive wideband genes) with a lot of Rufus.

Can you post pictures?

 No. I have tried and tried and now my camera is down for the count and my computer is in the shop again.

But if you look at a week old castor rex kit, these NZ kits look JUST LIKE THAT!!! So pretty and unexpected.

When I get my computer back I will try one other way to post the pictures and then cry uncle when it doesn't work.

:p they are high Rufus chestnuts :)

Your red buck is basically a chestnut with non-extension and wideband so chestnuts are to be expected when crossed to a REW who are usually chestnuts, gold tipped steel or black hidden under their white fur

Great! Now I know. :D

If one of them is a doe I shall be keeping it to cross with my rex bucks for meat mutts. If it stays this pretty as it grows, its well worth cage space.

Thanks guys, its nice to be able to clear up these puzzles in such a timely manner!

__________ Thu May 01, 2014 7:55 am __________

As an unrelated rex color question, is there a different name for all the shades of blue or are they all just blue?

Rex blues are called the same as other breeds

Blue agouti = opal
Blue chinchilla = squirrel
Blue shaded = smoke pearl
Blue sable point = blue point (not to be confused with "blue point Himilayans" who have red eyes)
Blue fawn = cream ( in some breeds "fawn" is used)

In Rex "Amber" is chocolate agouti
In Satins "copper" is a very high Rufus chestnut
In Angoras all self chins and shadeds are called "pearl"

And then when you go to UK, EU, Australian or New Zealand sites the names are different :groooan:

Which is why I like the genotypes

Could you post a link to some google images that match your kits?

In my opinion rex castors look like white bellied torts :)

Here is one of my Castor Rex....

A properly colored Castor should NOT look like a white bellied Tort at all...

When they are young they do have the pattern of a tort but a properly colored castor should even out by breeding age.

I get chestnut NZs. The contrast can be surprising. lol

Hmm...I guess it depends on the lines, because mine don't.... :)
