I've been offered a doe that is Castor and "probably" carries Chocolate.

The buck I'd be breeding her to is a REW who is genetically black but carries Chocolate.

Since I don't thoroughly understand either Chocolate or Castor, figured I'd ask...what are they likely to produce (assuming the doe does in fact carry Chocolate)? I know all the kits will be heterozygous for REW but none will actually BE a REW since the doe doesn't carry it...but that's the extent of my knowledge. Help? :)

Probably more Castor or Black, I wouldn't expect chocolate but who knows. I don't really know the technical terms, but from what I understand Castor is dominant over most everything except for Black. Think of Castor as an agouti-fied Black.

Buck - aa Bb cc D_ E_
Doe. - A_ Bb C_ D_ E_

You will likely get castor and chocolate castor. If the doe carries self (Aa) you could get blacks and chocolates.

If we knew the colour of the buck and does parents, siblings and any offspring we could fill in some of the blanks in their genotype and get a better idea of what they could produce.

PoPpLeS! :p

Oh thank goodness, I was beginning to worry they'd produce skunks or boll weevils.

 I'm glad I could put your mind at rest. ;)

You know what they say, you should always choose the lesser of two weevils. ;)

Hah! Funny clip!

chocolate castor would be amber. not showable in mini rex.
They often come out looking red/reddish. They can vary in shade from light to dark.

Castor is dominant to self, is it not? So likely mostly castors with some amber, self black and chocolate as well.

I was writing for a judge today and he commented that castor was the most difficult Mini Rex color, in his opinion...you will have to cull hard. Good luck with your new color!

Castor is the most difficult color in Standard Rex as well, though there are more good MR Castors than Standard Rex.

If they carry dilute, you could get lilac, and possibly Lynx. As Dood said, there are too many other blanks missing, and with a Castor, it could carry pretty much anything.

Huh, I don't much like the sound of all that! As nice as this doe is, I think I'll take a pass on her. ;)

Thanks so much, guys! :)

__________ Sun May 19, 2013 1:31 pm __________

LOL I'm totally freaking stupid some days. I heard "Otter" and my brain said "Castor."

The doe is an OTTER doe who DOES carry "self" and also carries Chocolate.

SO. Uhh. Bred to the same REW buck who is genetically black and carries Chocolate, what are the possibilities?!

I know TOTALLY NOTHING about Otter except that it's cute. :)

pretty much substitute otter into the castor slot and it's about the same, and then what ever else is the gene pool. Otter is an easy color to work with and hard to mess up, just stay away from Reds and Tris, basically anything that carries non extension ee.

Well, I'm intrigued by the Chocolate possibilities, and down the road I'll have REW, Blue, Black, and possibly Lilac if I understand dilution properly...and of course my BEW line too. :) So I won't be keeping any of the Otter offspring but a high-quality doe that will still produce 50% of what I want is worth it to me. :)

We have chocolate popping up everywhere. Otter should be a great asset to your program and nothing is cuter than a baby otter!!!!! Good luck Kyle!

Hey if you are ever interested in blacks, I have a black buck I'd be willing to actually give you. He would mesh well with any offspring the otter doe has or even with her. Comes from some super great breeders who no longer show or breed.

He has nice type, I'd need to look at him again.

Blacks frustrate me, I'd rather work with my reds and castors. Plus kellie talked me into another variety, chocolate, and choc agoutie for my reds.
