Okay, I am planning on getting a black buck in June. I want to start breeding black and blue torts, and already have a tort doe:

I was trying to make a chart to help me get the sense of it, and wanted to know what people thought.

Foundation Black (buck) x Foundation Tort (doe)

Generation 1:
Produces: Black, REW (both parents are carriers)

They would carry recessively:
Non-Extension, REW (probably, if they are not a REW), Dilute (from mother, 50% chance), Self

Generation 2:

G1 Black x F. Tort

Produces: Black, Tort

They would carry recessively:
Non-Extension, Possibly REW, Possibly Dilute, Self

Generation 3:

G2 Tort x Foundation Blue

Produces:

Tort (Blue is a NE carrier), Black

They would carry recessively:
Non-Extension, Dilute, Possibly REW, Self

Generation 4:

G3 Tort x Foundation Blue

Produces:
Blue Tort, Black Tort, Black, Possibly REW

They would carry recessively:
Non-Extension, Dilute, Possibly REW, Self

Does that make sense? So, basically what I am planning doing is breeding the buck and the doe together. I take a buck from that litter, breed it back to tort and keep a tort from that. Then, I would take that tort and breed it with a blue to lock in dilute, and breed the resulting tort carrying dilute back to its father.

I'm not a huge fan of REWs, so want to stay away from those. Sadly, both the buck I am getting and my doe are carriers for it.

Blue Torts were accepted into the Standard in....2012, I believe? Could be 2011, can't remember right now. I don't think a whole lot of people are working on them, so I thought I would give it a try.

The reason I am not just purchasing a tort buck and going from there is because tort is NOT a common variety in my area at all. I believe I own the only one right now. I want to change that, but of course it's going to take work. I want to, though, since I don't want to go the usual route with otters and siamese sables.

Does this sound like a good plan to you? (Hopefully Dood will come and help me sort this out...)

Sounds good :)

This is the "worst case senario" and if you're lucky and the new black buck carries non extension you could get torts in the first generation, or blue torts if he and your doe carry dilute :D If the G1 doesn't get REW you will increase the odds of getting just torts ;)

Unfortunatly not all ND bloodlines have good production qualities so if you get stillborns or litters of 1 or 2 it will likely take much longer to reach your goals

I am assuming you are breeding mainly for show but if you intend to pet out the extra kits then please consider breeding for a friendly temperament, tidy bathroom habits and not just a colour.

Of course! I have a block system I rely on:

I chose a tower, not a pyramid due to all of these aspects being important, but some take priority.

The bottom block is personality and health.

The second to bottom block is production quality (large litters, good milk production, long breeding life).

The third from bottom block is type.

The top block is color.

I take all of these things into account when I breed my rabbits. I don't just fling things together and hope they fit. I do have a small rabbitry, so I have to be picky.

That's true. I hope to change that with my line. I like using BUDs, just because they are such good mommas. Of course, the tort is a true dwarf which means peanuts. You should've seen me when I encountered my first peanut. Ugh, it was horrible.
