Okay, so I have this little litter of meat mutts. I didn't want to keep any, but the more I think about it, If I process out the whole litter, I have to wait another two months before I can breed my champ doe, and then I have to wait for one of her kits to mature before having two meat does in production again. If I save one little doe from this litter, she can start producing in eight to ten weeks, and I could always sell her later as a meat momma.
Anywho, I really want chestnut pelts if I'm going to keep anything but a pure bred, but the little doe that has the best build and temperament is a booted broken opal. I could keep the little chestnut runt and be almost guaranteed a chestnut either breeding to my broken fawn (may get brokens) or my champ buck (though they'll likely be silvered), but as stated, she's the runt, and she's pretty darn shy at that, too.
But, if I have the booted broken opal, and breed her to my champ buck, I should get some chestnuts theoretically if he doesn't carry dilute, right? (I know there's still a chance if he carries dilute...and they'd likely be silvered) and, I could use her to test my broken fawn to see if he carries the full color gene or if he's really a blue, though I'll get solids, brokens and Charlie's from that.
Does all this sound correct? I know there are other variables on color too with the recessives, but I'm primarily after chestnut without keeping the little chestnut doe, if possible. I'm still fairly new to genetics, so I'm learning as I go.
Thanks!
Oh, and I keep forgetting about him, but I do have a blue sallander buck too, though I see that producing mostly chinchilla and opals with the broken opal doe, both solid and broken.
