So, I get a call from hubby last night as I driving home. One of the rabbits bit him really hard. I had an idea who it was, but i asked anyway....yup, Big Mama. For some reason, she has decided that she does not like my hubby. She is about a week away from kindling, so I am inclined to cut her a break but she REALLY bit him good, with no warning whatsoever. He was reaching to get her water crock, just inside the cage. She had let him scratch her head just moments before with no issues...Also, this is the second time she has bitten him, the time before it was just a small nip, but it drew blood. She has lunged at me before but it was after I bred her, so I figured she was just upset. I guess I will wait to see if she kindles, if not then she will probably be headed off to freezer camp next weekend. I just cannot abide a rabbit that bites for no real reason.

She sounds dangerous to have around, and if she were here, she would definitely get culled! Your poor hubby!! That had to hurt.

I wouldn't say she did it for no reason if she's a week from kindling and he reached into her cage. It's instinct kicking in to protect the nest area.

The issue is that his hand had BEEN in the cage. She was letting him scratch her head and then when he reached for the bowl, which was closer to the door than she was, she lunged at him, bit down and yanked back on his hand. It probably needed a couple of stitches but I am a former EMT so I just patched it up for him. I am guessing she is a week from kindling, I never tried to palpate because she was so aggressive after I bred her. We will see what happens to her temperament if she kindles.....

__________ Sat Oct 08, 2011 8:45 pm __________

Eh, I'd cull.

There are just too many sweet rabbits to put up with one that bites...

Im with fuzzy9. Got to go. Do you have anyone else who can raise the kits when they come ?

I bred two does at the same time, but I am unsure if either of them took. If she kindles and the other one does not, I will keep her till they are weaned. Then, she goes....

As soon as the kits were 5 or 6 weeks old she would have a personal invite to freezer camp, no if's-and's-or but's....

Oh yeah, her ticket for that train has been stamped and is ready to go...the more I think about it, the more I just DO NOT want to have to deal with a rabbit that acts this way....
