Breeding through the wire

I am reading a few posts here and there about rabbits
breeding through the wire cages even being separate.

I had a cali doe kindle last December that was only here a
few days when it happened. I quizzed the guy who I bought
her from and he said that she was not exposed to a buck.
He was flabbergasted that she was bred. So I asked him if
she was in a line cage and if per chance the cage next to
her had a buck and he said yes. He had no clue such things
happened. At that point, I had only read this info online.

So I have one hanging line cage here and awhile back I did
put a buck in one of the cages. Good thing I was standing there
watching for awhile. I watched the doe in the cage section
next to him and wow was she interested . She backed her
butt right square to the wire and was waiting for him to figure
things out. I fooled them both. I pulled the buck back out
and put him in another cage real quick.

I probably shouldn't say anything :shutup: lest I curse myself, but my rabbits thankfully have not figured out how to do that.

This is actually one of the reasons I have individual cages hung 2" apart!

Twice now I've been sold pregnant does where the sellers swore up and down the doe could NOT be pregnant.
I've known other breeders who assured me their rabbits have figured out how to breed through wire.

I keep my bucks outside in hutches, and the does inside a separate building in their hanging cages.
I've picked up the habit of giving my new, quarantined, does a washpan (litterbox) stuffed with straw...just in case. Cleaning the washpans out for that first month it is easier on me than seeing a dead litter scattered across the wire.

I just have 2 thoughts on this. 1 - If anyone has a buck and doe who they don't mind breeding they could set this up and get video to put the argument to rest for the nonbelievers. 2 - This could be an option for those does who refuse to breed. Maybe they're doing it just to annoy the bucks and, well, :fireworks1:

I wish I had my camera when it happened. All I can say is that she was bucked against the wire while he looked to have been climbing it until he fell off that is. I checked Filifolia and she was a deep pink but not purple.
