Has anyone had problems with Blue eyed whites (or red eyed whites) getting sun damage? I know people who have had white cats that had to have skin cancer- tips of ear and nose removed and I'm wondering if the same thing happens with rabbits.
Right now My blue eyed white fuzzy lop jersey wooly is a mostly inside rabbit. I would like to start putting him outside- I have put him outside before and I've noticed he mostly stays in the shade part of the run. Do I need to worry about the sun burning him? Should I completely cover the runs so its all shade. New Zealand has extremely bright white sun- UV index gets up to 12-13 and a UV index of 7 is considered high.

I don't know about sun damage but I do know rabbits do not tolerate heat well. I would probably limit his outside time to early morning or evening when the sun isn't as severe as later in the day.

Any animal with thin hair on any part of the body can get sun damage. Horses with white around the eyes sometimes 'blind' or burn their corneas, thus the tattoo eye liner some do to them, but not always. My cat has white on the ears, fur is sparse, when she was younger, we had to put lotion on them, but now she no longer needs it.
