Is this a red just a lighter variation or a red with dilution and/or chocolate? What are those called btw? I think I remember red + dilution was cream? What about red + dilution + chocolate? All of these are possible as the dam is a lightly marked magpie that was bred back to her lilac sire.

And this one Is from the same litter. I think it's just a plain black tort right?

First pic

I see agouti and non extension = "fawns" (I don't think I see wideband which turns a fawn into a "red") It could be a very light/low Rufus fawn (AKA black fawn), Chocolate fawn or lilac fawn. I don't think it is blue enough to be a cream (AKA blue fawn) ;)

Second pic

I see self and non-extension = "torts". Looks a bit blue-ish to me so I think it is a blue tort

Thanks Dood!

I agree with Dood 100% . Chocolate or lilac...I can't really tell either. Try looking at the eyes and comparing to your other rabbits.
So far as I know, non extension doesn't affect eye color at all, so the eyes should match the genetic coat color.
A lilac's eyes will be more smokey grey-blue than a chocolate's, but not anywhere near the dark slate blue that you would see on a dilute without chocolate.

Hey, while we're on eye color topic...My magpie kits have the mottled blue and brown eye color that black based chinchilla buns sometimes have. Any idea what would cause that genetically?

I've noticed that chin often does cause marbled eyes or grayish eyes in my rabbits here. The magpie doe that is the dam of these kits has gray eyes. Chinchilla must strip some of the pigmentation out of the eye. This would cause a marbled or grayish eye. Eye pigmentation in even brown eyed humans is a mixture of pheomelanin (red pigment) and eumelanin (black pigment) and the amount of each varieties. So it makes sense it would be the same in rabbits, to some degree, and since chinchilla strips pheomelanin from the coat it probably does the same to the eye. Why eye color in some rabbits is affected and in other it's not? I would guess it's a variation in the ratio of pheomelanin to eumelanin that can be changed by modifiers of some sort.

Of course I'm just guessing but it makes sense to me.

:) magpies are chinchillas with two harlequin or a harlequin and a non-extension and as Alforddm states, chins often have blue-ish grey eyes

In my bloodline the kits usually have grey eyes and some will start to turn brown around 6 to 10 weeks and can have a mottled look

My question wasn't intended to ask why are they similar to chinchillas, it was why is the chinchilla gene causing incomplete eye mottling.
I definitely could have worded that better... :)

The little ramble about pigments I was what looking for. Modifiers huh...

I have brown eyed, blue gray, gray, and amber eyed chins. Seems to be no pattern here. I've never noticed any difference in coat color between them either. gotta love modifiers.

If I remember correctly, robinson says that the marbled blue eye in chins is probably a distinct gene, separate from C but with close linkage to it (which implies it is on the same chromosome and physically close to C).

The eyes look blue right now. I'm thinking maybe a dilute fawn. I'm waiting to see if they change any with age.

My guess will be for lilac based fawn then. I know there is a lot of variation, but she looks a little lighter/softer in shade than my chocolate tort was.
