Of course people want the itsy bitsy tiny ones but then the fools go and breed them and wonder why their rabbit died, or why some of the kits are half the size and die.
I hate how the dwarf breeds have become popular, they just have too many problems for the general public to properly care for them. Rabbits can be small with out having a dwarf gene - look at the Brittania Petites and Polish, although I have heard that some unscrupulous breeders HAVE added the gene and it is popping up in these breeds.
It is just so sad.
I never understood the worlds desire for unhealthy animals. Bully breeds who cannot repoduce naturally, Pekingese who cannot breathe, Double merle's, Twisty cats, HYPP horses, Dwarf rabbits, the list goes on and IMHO they should all be removed from the gene pool.
IMO, "Twisty Cats" are an example of cruelty. It is one thing if an animal has a genetic mutation that doesn't negatively affect them, I have a Munchkin cat who has legs two inches long and she can run as fast, jump as high and do everything a "normal" cat can do, plus she can use her little paws like hands to grab things!!! But Twisty Cats? Those poor things can't move right, can't run or jump or play...they can't live their lives like a normal cat can.
HYPP...people often don't "get" me, because I LOVE Impressive. He's AMAZING. He's GORGEOUS. He is, IMO, Foundation QH perfection. And while I'm pro-Impressive, I'm anti-HYPP. The Paint I used to own was a direct descendant of Impressive. He was HUGE, short (15 hh) and MASSIVELY muscled (over 1,200 pounds). And...he was HYPP N/N...I insisted he be genetically tested before I bought him. I hate that HYPP even exists any more. There are PLENTY of Impressive-line horses who are N/N, there's no need to breed N/P or gods forbid P/P horses any more!!! To me, the thought of breeding a HYPP positive horse is morally wrong...you could be condemning that baby to someday die horribly. Yet people do it all the time!!! There's no excuse...the test is like $20. Not a big deal!!! What irks me most is that so many people don't educate themselves about it...they buy Foundation horses and have no idea what they are doing, they just pop out a foal and ta da!!! Poor critter dies randomly. Totally preventable pain and death!!!!
I'm especially irked by double merles. I had one "breeder" (using the term loosely here because I'd much rather use the term "horrid person") explain to me that she purposefully bred a litter of merle-to-merle Shelties HOPING for a double merle, so she could use it as a breeding animal to ensure all pups would be merle, because people will pay more for a merle. When I asked what she would do if the pups were born deaf or WITHOUT EYES, she said it doesn't matter, they're just dogs. Needless to say we don't speak any more. You know what? My friend Arthur has a gorgeous tri-color Aussie. His breeder bred a merle to a tri hoping for merles...and got a litter of 100% tri. And that is okay because they are all healthy, happy dogs. Healthy animals free of defects should be the goal of EVERY breeder, color is just a bonus!!!!
Super-tiny "teacup" dogs are another "pet peeve" of mine. Yeah, my tiny rescue dog is cute, and everyone who meets her is like "Ooooh I want a tiny little dog just like this!!" Uhhhhh no they don't!!!!!! The vet bills are horrendous, she breaks her little toothpick bones doing normal dog things, she could pass out and die of a blood sugar fluctuation at any second. Yet some breeders purposely breed weedy, sickly dogs to produce practically deformed runts and sell them for lots of $$$$$ because they're suuuuuper tiny. It leads to a lot of heartache since most people can't cope with the special needs of such a dog.
Don't get me started on extreme Brachycephalic dogs.........it's a lengthy, venom-and-bile rant of rage. Anything in "extremes" that causes problems isn't worth the "aesthetic look," end of story.
Ahem. Now that I'm THOROUGHLY off-topic, LOL..........
I think there's a seriously steep learning curve with dwarf rabbits and since there's so much that can (and often does) go wrong, it needs to be a labor of love and left to those who really, truly care. My Hollands were full of distress and heartache for me, so while I love the breed they just aren't for me. I have high hopes for my Mini Rex, but I made sure to get some chunky does and a buck with a nice big butt.
Yeah I've actually done some in depth study of the BEW genes for my college bio 122 genetics assignments. I've studied all about the genetics and problems till info was flowing out my eyeballs haha.
Please do feel free to share!!!!!!!! BEW is one of the prettiest colors IMO, I'd love to learn more!!!!
Agreed XD my pedigrees are insane. I have everything on them and have to WAY simplify them for shows so the judges are not like.....This is a pedigree it is the entire history of your rabbits ancestors! Haha
That makes you awesome.
