I have two people on a waiting list right now- 3Mina, and a fellow I met through FaceBook. *Edit! Three- I have a stunning chocolate doe (due any day!) and a fellow exhibitor put himself on the list for kits out of her early in her showing career.
The thing is, I wont sell anything if it is not show quality. By that I don't mean simply "free of DQ's", it has to be a quality animal that will be competitive... so if they want a specific variety they may have to wait. Just because I have rabbits that meet their color specifications it doesn't mean they are worth going anywhere but the freezer.
I do have extensive waiting lists for puppies, and what I do is simply have an email draft and add them to it (with date and preferences), so I can send out an announcement when the litter is born. They have first pick in chronological order.
I personally do not take deposits because I don't want to tempt fate- you never know what may happen to an animal!- and no doubt the money would already be spent so refunding them would be problematic.
If any of the sales should fall through, there are plenty of other buyers out there. I also don't like for people to feel pressured to take an animal (because there is money already on the table) if they have something come up that makes it a burden at the time.
If they are unable to pick up the animal at eight weeks, I will sometimes charge a per day fee to cover care and feed.
