I always wanted an Indigo but you need a special permit here so I bred Mexican Black Kingsnakes instead :D

I down sized several years ago and just have a Pueblan Milksnake (27 years old and doesn't look a day over 10!) two leuistic leopard geckos, two red eared sliders and a Rose haired tarantula.

Closest I got were my Gray Tree Frogs.
If I were to keep a snake, it'd have to be one of those very tiny, nonpoisonous ones, some are called worm snakes or something because they looks just like worms. The bigger they get, the more ugly and less interesting they are to me. =/

The Mexican Black Kings are great! I hear people refer to them as the "poor man's indigo". Eastern Indigos aren't allowed in Ontario without a permit? I know here in the US you need a permit for traveling over state lines. If you live in a state where they are a native species it's pretty much impossible to get a federal permit. I have a few friends that opted for Black Kings since they weren't able to get any of the Indigo subspecies.

I got lucky with my male. His owner was just 2hrs from me in WA as well so I didn't have to get a permit since we weren't moving him across state lines.

__________ Sun Jul 07, 2013 11:37 am __________

Those little guys are cute!! One of my first phibs was a fire-bellied toad. I'm not too crazy about frogs and toads but some of them are pretty interesting.

There are plenty of smaller nonvenomous snakes out there. Kenyan Sand Boas and Rosy Boas for instance don't get very large, especially males. Squeak is fully grown in that photo at 13 yrs of age. Worm snakes are really interesting but they tend to not do well in captivity.

Wow, they're all beautiful!

I can appreciate them, but no thanks for me! :D

I really appreciate that Miss M!

Snakes aren't for everyone but I think people should respect animals for what they are. People don't have to like my pets but they don't need to be rude about it by saying they are monsters or ugly. Heaven forbid I'd call their children that, though I've met far more rotten children than snakes ;)

Gorgeous snakes! The sunglow is really pretty. I can't believe all the morphs that there are now- back in my day, they were all just normal varieties.

The only reptile I have right now is Granacie, a Pakistan Leopard Gecko. She is probably around 24 or 25 years old now, and I have had her since she was a baby. :)

I used to have Argentine Horned Frogs- back then they were called "Pac-Man" frogs. Their names were "Watch Out!" and "Hoover".

Someday I would like to get another Hog Island Boa. I had one for a very short time and loved him. He died tragically when my Hubs (then boyfriend) left him in his truck while visiting his brother... he thought that "snakes like heat" and he would be okay. :(

Shumes you have a nice collection! I used to have a pair of pueblan milksnakes and some tortoises but I sold them after being in a car wreck and was down for a while. Right now I have a red-footed tortoise and enjoy the toads, greys treefrogs, green anoles and local snakes outside.
I love your Indigo snake! When I lived in Florida, we saw alot of Indigo snakes there. They are so cool! :)

Ack CnB ! :p Love your Greys treefrogs! We have them living wild here and right now we are covered up with tadpoles from them. The adults love to stick to the windows at night and gobble bugs attracked to the light. I'll have to see if we have any pics of last years babies when they first emerge as a little froglets!
For a snake look up Pueblan milksnake, I used to have a pair. They are pretty and they are nice. :)

We want a snake but we haven't gotten one yet. For one we move every 3 years so it seems rough on a snake. Dogs like car rides and so long as the AC is on they don't really care. Rabbits seem to be ok with it, mine made a 4 hour trip no problems. But I'd worry that a reptile would either overheat or get too cold during the trip.
But once we start our homestead all bets are off..

I love snakes, always have. But my parents and now my husband, have vetoed their presence. So no snakes for me. I play with my nephew's corn snake though. He likes to climb around in my mass of curly hair :) We did recently kill a couple in our chicken house. I won't generally bother a non poisonous one. But I can't lose all my eggs and they weren't good at sharing.

Lucky you seeing an Indigo in it's natural habitat!! :D I would love to see that one day. It's a shame so many are killed simply because they look like big, black scary snake. Most people don't realize that not only do Indigos take care of the rodent population but they have quite the taste for rattlesnakes :)

Wow, 24 or 25! That is incredible. People don't realize how long reptiles live for when cared for properly. I bet she is a spoiled girl :) The Argentine Horned Frogs are still called Pac-Mans in the industry. I would love to get one at some point. They are cute little things and such pigs.

I'm sorry about the loss of your Hog Island :( They are a beautiful species. I hope you can get another soon!

Snakes are pretty good travelers. They are commonly shipped all across the country via FedEx overnight which would be more stressful than a quite car trip that's a few hours long. If the car isn't too hot for you and rabbits, it wouldn't be too hot for a snake. Cold would be a problem but that's what they make heat packs for ;) When I transport snakes in winter I use Hot Hands.

__________ Sun Jul 07, 2013 4:28 pm __________

That's sad about killing them instead of relocating. I have a mass of curly hair too :) It can be a pain when snakes really get tangled, huh? :p

Shumes, your snakes are beautiful! Snakes fascinate me, but for actual pets I prefur moggies. :benice:

CnB, love your gray tree frogs! Are they pets or just local residents? It's a bumper crop of tree frogs here this year... They breed in our rainbarrels and sing "rounds" at night. I just wish they'd turn the volume down a tad. They are noisy little guys... but I'm fond of them anyway.

Shumes it was exciting to see the Indigo in action. One time we saw a rat leaping as fast as he could through the pasture, (we had horses)the grass was tall. Sure enough here came an Indigo snake in hot pursuit! His head held just above the grass and he was amazingly fast!! I don't know if he caught the rat or not, they disappeared into the scrub but he sure was focused!!! It was awesome! :)
