I don't quite get what is creepy about brains. Once the animal is dead, the more we can use of it, the more we show it respect and gratitude. Why is a brain more taboo than a heart, liver or kidney? Or, for that matter, the meat itself? :?

I think it is the texture, and the appearance of the surface. I suppose if you put it in a blender before using it it wouldn't be quite so icky... but I can guarantee I'd be fighting not to wretch anyway.

I can dissect anything, but when it comes to the skull, I can't ring myself to get the brain out.

Well, Maggie - you must have a special anti-squeamish stomach. Do zombie movies make you squeamish?? I have always been very troubled by the idea of cracking open skulls and brains. I totally agree however, that using all parts of the animal is the highest respect one can do. Maybe I'll ask my partner if he's squeamish and maybe he'll get the brains out and mix them up...
On that note, I'm wondering what the heck to do with all these rabbit feet? Does anyone cure them and how - or is that so 1970's?

Ditto! Leave the hair on and just toss one to each.

Heads go to my LGS pup, only one who eats them.

__________ Wed Aug 22, 2012 12:12 pm __________

I don't like the brains either, I won't do anything with heads other than give them to my pup to eat...ewww.

I don't think I've ever watched a zombie movie. It would probably make me laugh. Horror, unless very subtly done, is so unbelievable as to be comic.

The only horror movie that ever riled me was the Sixth Sense.

So, do the "Saw" movies not phase you? Or is it also a comedy?
They are nothing but gore and it's just nasty. I can watch it, sure, but it's just not horror, so pointless to watch. Still has some gag feeling to it.

I haven't ever been into horror movies- at least not the chainsaw massacre types- and I never watched any of the Chuckie ones either. Dolls creep me out, so the last thing I need is to watch some psychotic doll going after people. (Shudder!)

I liked The Sixth Sense.

I really have seen very few horror movies. The ones I have seen are pretty boring... and if there is a "gag" effect who wants that? I like people movies, quality realistic ones. But to tell you the truth I prefer reading novels to watching movies. Again, good quality, well-written fiction.

I'll take a book over a movie anytime.

It tickles me to death when my kids say "The book was so much better than the movie." I have raised a family of bookworms! :p (Pats self on back.)

I don't remember the blood and brains... it has been years since I watched it. I don't watch movies very often, and we haven't had "TV" since June of last year.

I am "Cinematically Oppressed"... and proud of it! :D

Long live the written word! :p

Just to clarify I wasn't referring to cheesy 'saw' movies. More like the rather comic "Return of the Living Dead" I saw in my youth :) It was a tongue in cheek zombie movie spinoff from the original. Needless to say, I really don't subject myself to slasher films because its a waste of my time and is subjecting myself to nasty imagery. Just as we are what we eat, what we spend our time subjecting our psyches to influences us on more levels than we are aware and pops out when we least expect it. I prefer movies with meaning. The Hollywood lust for thrills really bores me. Most movies out of Hollywood bore me, too formulaic and predictable, tidy, puts everyone in their proper stereotypes.

That said, I usually avoid horror genre altogether. Who needs that - to create more fear and paranoia!

I likes Sixth Sense as well, but I don't think that was 'horror" was it?

I will admit to enjoying the new twist on old characters - like the vampire movies where they are really quite likeable ;) But movies like Twilight aren't horror, I think they pretty much fall under 'romance'!!

That's what I mean, I don't need blood and brains. I used to watch CSI when it first came out. then, it started that new thing when it zooms in and gets really gory. That was the end of that.

Here's another pat on the back from a Book Worm in New Jersey. Was tickled pink to hear my Son say the same thing when we watched a movie from a book. Especially the Harry Potter series. My family didn't believe me when I said he read the series at 8 years old, especially the 4th book with over 800 pages. Amazing what homeschooling will accomplish, isn't it?

Was a big "Horror" Movie buff as a kid, but the "horror" movies now are just full of blood and guts. Nothing entertaining there.

And IMHO, Sixth Sense, which I totally enjoyed, was not a "Horror" movie. More scary and suspenseful. Haven't even ventured into the Twilight series. Like said before, more romance than scary or horror.

It certainly is! Every Sunday we take Advanced Defensive Handgun classes, and all of our classmates know we homeschool our kids. When the kids aren't in their own class, they always have their noses buried in their books, and people can't believe that they read for pleasure. My eldest son recently finished Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, and reads a lot of books on military history, American history, etc. and people are astonished that they are not "assigned reading", rather that he chooses to read such books. :)

So... turns out the alum (aluminum sulfate) called for in that Mother Earth News recipe is the same stuff that's been used for a hundred years in making pickles that people EAT. Doesn't sound that toxic to me! That Wikipedia link doesn't mention toxicity, just uses.

Wondering how your alternative recipes are coming along. I would like to use a more natural method, that doesn't stain... otherwise apparently have to get alum in 50-lb bags, its going to take me a good long while to go through it before I reach for a new recipe! Please keep us posted on your results, I would love to try a truly sustainable method.
