So sorry to hear that you lost 2 of them!!!

Yes, the oatmeal being referenced is the breakfast oatmeal ... feed dry in a seperate container so they don't dig their pellets looking for the oatmeal. It is a good program to actually start the babies on the oatmeal in the nest box when they open their eyes ... just sprinkle a pinch and they will hunt them out.

As a substitute, are there any native plants that are used for dispelling gas or to soothe an upset tummy that would be given to very young babies? If there are, you can try a small taste test on an adult to see how they react to it. If no issue, try a dab on a smaller bunny, etc until you are trying it on the younger ones ... the healthy ones for now. Then, if you have this problem again, try it to see how it works.

How quickly after it died do you suppose you had it opened up? I ask just because gas will start to form in the intestines after death, and can bloat things up pretty quickly.

That said, it does look like it wasn't that long to me. Things do not look normal in there, with that gas.

As far as diet goes, many buns have no trouble at all transitioning from milk to pellets, but some do. It could be that this particular litter is just having problems with the transition. You can try feeding them live-culture yogurt to help. Also, if your doe doesn't leave a few random bunny berries in her nest box, you may want to collect some in the future to put there. It sounds gross, but the babies will nibble on them, and they will provide their little baby guts with good bacteria to help their systems get going. Putting some rolled oats in the nest box will give their tummies something easy to start with. :)
