    Getting slime off

So no one else has experienced this slime stuff? Maybe it is because I use a knife to help get the hide off. I'll try arachyd's technique and see what happens. I always skin and butcher immediately after the kill. Thanks for the input! Tomorrow is butchering day, so I hope to have good news then.

    Getting slime off

I'm having a really difficult time finding a technique for getting the slime layer off between the skin and the meat. Also I can't seem to get the silver skin off cleanly without butching the butchering job. Ideas?

    Doe biting kits

What is frustrating, is that I DID keep an open mind, but as soon as I ruled out mice or rats, I was told I was still wrong. And even more frustrating, when someone else has a similar issue, it's taken as fact and not due to anything else....please try to understand where I'm coming from....I...

    Doe biting kits

Well I have to disagree, we don't have mice or rats. I know some of you are convinced that is my problem, but I can say for a fact we don't. 1.) We recently cleaned and organized the garage botoom to top. I would have seen droppings *somewhere*. 2) If there were any around the garage, or even...

    Doe biting kits

I honestly have never even seen a rat outside of a pet store. I have seen mice, twice. Once when I was a younger child, and then last summer in our old house. I've never heard of any mice/rat infestations around here, so I don't believe there is any problem. I still think that the one bite...

    Feed prices

I don't buy pellets...but I buy BOSS which is $20 for a 50lb. bag, I buy oats from the health food store, for 0.79/lbs. I usually buy 20lbs. at a time. I pay $8 for a bale of alfalfa hay, and I recently started buying alfalfa/timothy/grass hay cubes, for $8 for about 40lbs.

How transition to using rabbits as meat

For me it was the fact that I need to feed my family, and also the fact that one of my dogs is allergic to beef, chicken, turkey, and a few other things. I like to incorporate raw food into their diet, and rabbits breed fast, are easy keepings, and cheap to maintain and feed, especially if they...

    Doe biting kits

I'll try the grain idea you suggested, hopefully that will give me an idea of whether or not it could be rats. I'm positive the cut is a bite mark, it is identical to the two bites I received from the doe yesterday. The one with the ear cut could possibly be from mom's claws. Thanks for the...

    Doe biting kits

I've never seen a rat, or even so much as a mouse around here. I thought if there was I might at least see droppings, but I don't see anything. The rabbits are kept in my garage, and I have all food/hay/straw in sealed containers to prevent any rodents making homes in it. The doe is very...

    Doe biting kits

I have a litter of three day old kits. Started out with 13, lost one for an unknown reason, I'm afraid I'm going to lose the runt, and now I noticed mom has bitten two of the kits. Could it be because I've had my hands in there a lot lately, with checking on the runt and feeding it? This is her...

    How would you take this?

Just calmly explain to her, what you did to us. She can't fault you for having your own reasons to not needing him, after all, she didn't seem to have a problem with him being snake food to begin with.

If there is nest making going on,is it always pregnancy?

My does start nesting at 14 days or so, I put in their nextbox around day 25 and they always, without fail, have the babies outside of the nestbox. I always transfer them to the nestbox as soon as possible, and the moms don't seem to care. Mine also get friendlier when pregnant :)

    33 Day Pregnancy

I didn't build my nestboxes with a hood, but it might be something to consider doing. The way my hutches are set-up, is 3' of wire, and then a 2x2 entirely enclosed area, with straw on the bottom, then I put the nestbox on top of that, and put in more straw. Rotting kits is exactly why I check...

    33 Day Pregnancy

Well we lost a kit today :( checked on them this morning and counted them several times, only counting 12. I had DH come out and count too, just in case I was wrong, but he only counted 12, too. The litter had moved towards the front of the nestbox, so I dug around where they were before, and...

    There's so much to know!

I have to agree as well. I'm still fairly new to rabbits, and I'm learning new things everyday. This forum especially has given me a lot of insight I didn't even know I needed!

    33 Day Pregnancy

Thanks everyone, I'm pretty excited! I hope I don't lose any but I won't be surprised if I do. This is her second litter, they are so teeny compared to her first litter on 9. The babies are 1/4 New Zealand, 1/4 Giant Chinchilla, and half Checkered Giant. Early yesterday morning hubby checked...
