    Pumpkins!

Yep. ;) I had good luck with them and will have them again, if I ever move my setup outdoors. I'm in an attached garage for now, and there was just too much hair.

    Pumpkins!

I brought my love of fall and the harvest season with me to southern Florida when my family moved here from the pumpkin and corn fields of northern Illinois. :autumn: That was 44 years ago! After saying I was going to try it for all these years, I finally got some pumpkin seeds to plant for...

    Checking in after another hiatus...

One could do worse than the neighbors I mentioned. We're in a wooded, semi-rural area. He lets his dogs run free, but I'm convinced that his dog's established territory provides a buffer between us and any number of wild predators. Coyotes, black bears, bob cats, owls etc. We're inside the...

    Checking in after another hiatus...

Thanks, Maggie. One dog ran away as soon as I got there. The other one... I was beating it with a broomstick and it just gave me this blank, "What?" look. It kept weaving in and out under the cages before I finally got ahold of it. (Getting bit was in the back of my mind.) I pulled it out on to...

    Checking in after another hiatus...

These are the discouraging months, raising rabbits in Florida. Too hot to breed... The buns are miserable from the heat... Yard work kicks in to high gear, and cleaning cages becomes a real chore. Meanwhile, the boat wants to be taken out. The other day, two dogs that I've never seen before...

    Tail Wagging?

Actually, the first time I noticed it was shortly after she kindled her first litter, 5 weeks ago. She was nervous at first, but never aggressive. Now, she comes to the cage door for a nose rub. Or maybe, it's some BOSS or a parsley sprig. Or maybe it's to beg me to get the kits out of...

    Variety color chart

That's beautiful! I didn't know what otter was until I saw your chart. My newest litter of mutts has a couple that kind of lean towards otter, I guess. :) I love my Beagles, and a while back, I found a chart of Beagle colors that's very similar. It's just pleasing to look at.

    Tail Wagging?

Since I got my first rabbits, present company included, about 40 rabbits have passed through my herd. I have a doe right now who wags her tail excitedly when ever she's see's her food or a treat coming. I don't mean a little twitch. I'm talking about a full blow wag, like a crop-tailed Yorkie...

    Brainstorming rabbit theme names

Love the Borg bunny! I never watched ST Voyager when it aired, but it's on Netflix now and I'm really enjoying it. That Borg bunny got me thinking... My wife and I were adopting retired racing greyhounds for a while, years ago. Part of their ear tattoo designation was, litter...

Anyone keep smaller breeds for meat?

I'm only a couple years in, but I started mixing Florida Whites with Havanas. Partly, because it's what I have on hand. FWs are small bricks of meat. Havanas aren't as stocky, but they have silky fur. We want to try doing some pelts for craft projects, and want color variety. We had our first...

    Happy Easter Weekend!

Haven't been around much. I'v been busy. Just thought I'd share a few spring time pictures... Picked up some Leghorn pullets to add to the flock... A litter of month old, Florida White/Havana mutts chowing down with Mom... Grandma watches from next door... Do my ears make my ears...

    Eoghan is pissy today

Was he shedding? I had a very large, very calm, common boa for a few years. He got me once, but it was because he was shedding and half blind. My thumb ended up down his throat and his front teeth were in my wrist. I had a heck of a time pealing him off. I'd get one side unhooked, and the other...

    Not enough homes

Funny... I just logged in to inquire about Belgian Hares. I'm way down in southwestern Florida, but I thought I'd chime in. I looked at the ABHC website this afternoon and found a breeder and club officer about an hour away from me. I sent off an email a little while ago. Yes... I'm thinking I...

    fried liver

I'll give this a bump... "With all that good muscle meat on an animal, why eat the guts?" That's what I say. If it's ground up in a sausage, I'll eat it, but please don't tell me it's in there. Gizzards? There is no way that big rubber clam inside that bird is something eatable! I know...

    I'm at a Crossroads

The Havanas are kind of "fancy" with their silky fur. My black doe is pretty high strung though. I'm only 2 litters in to mixing her with my laid back FW buck. The young are chunkier than Mama, and calmer. Also more interesting than solid black or white. The doe has chocolate and broken black in...

    I'm at a Crossroads

As planned, I delivered the 3 SFs and 1 Havana on Sunday. The Silverfoxes are really sweet rabbits and I hated to see them go, but they were SO messy! Hair everywhere, and big rabbits pee and poop big. the Havana was a mess too. It took me a while, but I learned that if I beat him to the punch...
