    Family Emergency/Vacation Care

I'm not a social person in any way, but I do rely on people in my road for this. I pay a teen girl to care for my rabbits the few days I'm away, in the last year that was for a metal festival, christmas, and a family matter. I do have 2-3 backup persons I could ask to step in if there is any...

Doe is emptying nest box and cage floor

What style of nestbox are you using? To me it sounds like she has good instincts and tried to dig a nesting tunnel, something rabbit sized, with a dead end and roof above. Some of mine dug such tunnels when pregnant, that's an natural instinct. I had litters there, but moved them into the...

    Water bottles in winter

I use stainless steel crocks for dogs, with an electric heating element (siliconized 12V/10W heating pad from Ebay) under it, hooked up to an adjustable power supply, I run it on appr. 6-9V. Removing the ice from the crocks always was the worst inconvinience for me, well worth putting some...

Can rabbits eat and thrive on brown dead grass through winter?

They are somewhat picky what branches they eat, and do avoid harmful stuff or amounts, at least when they have some practice picking their food. Also some stuff is tastier than other, like, mine like fir but ignore spruce., their favorites apart from all fruit trees (including plums etc) are...

Can rabbits eat and thrive on brown dead grass through winter?

Wild, and if given the chance also domestic rabbits find some greenish stuff under the snow, close to the ground, and under the dead stuff. Although they do sometimes eat it, the brown, dead grasses alone lack nutrients. Starch, sugars and protein have been removed into the roots or detoriated...

Please HELP nursing doe is sneezing

No expert, more dilettante ;) One of my does did sneeze now and then, I think these episodes were connected to some form of stress, like nursing or heat. No discharge, and the sneezing fits weren't too bad. Didn't pass it on, she's 5yo now and is retired from breeding from now on, for a...

    Dang. ****. *******.

I hope so, he's an agouti. Tort could be hiding in that black doe 50/50 chance. Anyway, that's not thre real issue. What hurts is that Pipi was just so smart, she understood what I was telling her, like, "go home", and when I came 15 minutes later to check she was home. Battled her escapism the...

    Dang. ****. *******.

I keep my rabbits like cats, they can get out free roam when I'm at home, out on the meadow, forest, whatever they like. Just without the "killing birds" part cats do. They were cautious enough to stay clear of the street. Not much traffic anyway, mayby 20 cars per day. This worked for 10 years...

Questions for people who use a pellet pistol for dispatch please

With CO2, temperature is critical. Pressure depends on temperature. Short barrel pistols simply don't have much power, if that revolver is working like a real one with a gap between cylinder and barrel that's even worse.

Black Friday tab - needs serious re-evaluation

I do wonder what on an ad site you have to click was obviously worse than all the stuff children "find" on the internet anyway... I always get the same items. There is some algorithmus behind it that relies on scripts and cookies if you get different each time. It's not about search history...

Black Friday tab - needs serious re-evaluation

Could it be that are personalised ads, Google extrapolating the data it has about your computer? I don't see anything inapropriate, but I don't use Google, almost all it's background "services" blocked - have a scriptblocker running to not have it track everything I do on every website. I don't...

Brown-Eyed White Doe Lost Her Third Batch of Kits

I don't think breeding her early has much to do with it, had similiar things happen and never any issue. My first litters all were successful, problems start to pop up when the does get older, I retire tham at about 5 (latest was at 7, she didn't care much about my plans). The cadence though, if...

    Making your own healthy feed

I feed forage whenever possible, apart from what grows on my property also stuff that other people don't care to mow, along embankments, unused plots etc. Also trees along the brook that need cutting. In winter it's hay, and some vegetables and fruit I grow myself or get from friends: apples...

What to do about a late litter?

Honestly, under normal circumstances I would not think she's pregnant. Pregnancy isn't really determined by mating, but hormons. I've heard of litters days apart, does happen, but I would rather suspect differences in nutrition supply to the uterine horns than a double pregnancy. Had a litter...

    question about skin color

That has always startled me when tanning pelts, the skin colorur patterns do not match the fur colour. No idea if this has anything to do with the coat colour type, or if it's something completly different.

    Old but new

Welcome :) I started raising meat rabbits when I was about 40, just needed something to care for, and there are similiar childhood memories of my grandfather raising rabbits - well, back then in that area every second house had chickens or rabbits. When you build your cages, make them easy to...

Does anyone have pics of an over-fat butchered mature rabbit?

After reading here "How to render fat" I'm saving that fat in a bag in the freezer, didn't butcher anything this year so far, so it'll take some time to have enough to do it. But you can definatly use that fat. Don't waste it, it's fat after all.

Should I leave nesting boxes in the rabbits cage all the time?

Colony means a group of rabbits in a rather large area, where they can sort out their social structure. Multiple does, can't tell about bucks since I have never done it this way. Might depend on how the bucks get along. I have all my does together (2 active, 2 retired), and bring the does to...

    Litter Training

Apart from my little troupe I have two free roam house bunnies too. I use an Ikea shallow storage bin as litter tray, and a cat litter tray. The bigger one is at their hay/food racks in my vestibule, their home base, they like to eat'n'poop. Wood stove pellets work great and are reasonable...
