    getting coturnix quail

I got started in them about 6 weeks ago...well...9 weeks ago, because I hatched out my first batch. So I got eggs about 9 weeks ago and chicks....well...you get the picture. Anyway. I kept 9 hens and 2 roos out of my first batch. Yesterday my second batch started hatching (71 out of 119 so...

How do I explain to an anti-meat person???

A couple of my friends used to give me heck about raising "poor innocent bunnies" for meat. I just stopped talking about it around them...changed the subject away from them when they came over and saw them...basically just didn't talk about it. Finally one day at a dinner out they were talking...

    Rabbitry plans for 2014

Ummmm...switching over to quail for 2014 LOL. Haven't decided if I want to go back to rabbits yet. I miss them...but I think quail breeding sets will be easier to keep indoors in the winter then rabbits. I HATE dealing with them outdoors in the winter. Breeders inside....grow-outs...

Very special cat, blood in urine :-(

I understand your aversion to western medicine. But as a former vet tech and knowing what can happen if you sit on something like this too long....my advice is. Take her to the vet. I know it's going to cost a lot, and I know you don't want the rabies vaccine. But if she's as special a cat...

high capacity or semi-automatic feeder ideas?

I put an extension on my J-feeder made from cardboard or metal. Just rig up a open ended box the same shape as your J feeder opening (or taper it to fit into your J feeder opening) and duct tape it to the j-feeder...secure to cage with zip ties or bungees. I could feed up to a week depending...

    ANYBODY RAISING QUAIL??

Thanks. Yeah...I'm already planning on what I want to start over with LOL. It'll just be much easier this winter if I don't have any rabbits... I'm looking forward to seeing your setup Zee (That means please post pictures!) I think I'm going to try for Standard Coturnix as well!

    ANYBODY RAISING QUAIL??

I'm going to try them this spring. I'm culling ALL my rabbits this weekend    for various and sundry reasons. So the hutches will sit empty till this spring...instead of starting over with rabbits (which I may do at some point) I'm going to put quail into the hutches for...

    Using a pellet gun

I'm not sure I would attempt it with a velocity that low...but I would aim behind the head, between the ears, pointed at the nose. The skull should be fairly thin their compared to the forehead.

what are these worth = snakes

A normal is around $50. The low white pied...$100-$200. Pinstripe About $100....the Het carmels Around $100 each...if you're not planing to breed them though there is no point in paying that much for them though, just buy normals.

I think I want to start a new project...

I think I want to start a new project....a rex coated dutch. What do you all think? Am I crazy? A mini rex with the dutch pattern? Be a nice winter project I think...and spring project, and fall project...and repeat lol.

Getting my new friend ready for winter

All I ever did for my "pet" rabbit was stuff his little hide box with hay and keep his water unfrozen. No heat lamp needed...on the really really cold bitter windy days when I opened his hide box and checked on him it was always toasty warm in there...and most days with a few feet of snow on...

    I converted my dad.

Hang them in buckets and "trellis" them down to the ground. We're going to do this next year, I've grown them in buckets before and they did wonderful. You don't even have to have them growing out of the bottom of the bucket, just from the top is fine, let them trail over the edge of the...

How to beat the heat ???!

I give frozen watermelon rind to help cool and hydrate them. I also have extremely heat tolerant rabbits (I just got lucky honestly...) My hutches are in the shade for all of but 2-3 hours a day, and tend to catch a nice breeze. I work 9:30 to 2 and just give a rind to them when I get home...

    My new rabbit bit me.....

Honestly....you know it's time for freezer camp...don't put yourself through months more of this. Ask yourself....do you really want kits out of her if she's like this? Good chances are her kits will be like this too.

Don't ever say it can't happen!

I lied...I did a count and she had 9, not 8. I need to rename my buck to "Once" as in "once and done!"

Don't ever say it can't happen!

I call him my "dirty old man" cause my buck that I was thinking of replacing him with sprayed all over him, he's molting, and he just looks like a dirty skeeze ball....but boy oh boy does he get the job done!

Don't ever say it can't happen!

Yesterday my Flemish doe had 8 babies.... After being bred to my more then likely heat sterile Rex buck.... And only having one fall off..... Never say never kids! Hehehe.

I got hit by the SCF!

And it actually kinda worked out.....sorta. I couldn't figure out why my replacement doe for a doe I culled this spring wouldn't lift and wouldn't lift and wouldn't lift....was driving me nuts...I stick my hand under her to lift her butt up to give my buck a hand....and felt...
