Questions about Willow Planting and Drying for Winter Storage

We have a huge old weeping willow tree. We also get high winds from time to time. When a limb came down and there was too much for fresh feeding alone, I dried large quantities for winter feed. I tied a knot in the four corners of an old bedsheet and hung it up in the shed like like a hammock...

Do rabbits in colonies get overweight?

I'll share my experience of this. I had rabbits in a colony for several years, but they were not getting pellets. On a natural diet of alfalfa/grass hay, small quantities of whole grain, and as much forage as the season permitted, they were not overweight. Hay and forage provided most of their...

    young rabbits and veggies ?

I think the person meant an eggcup. I know they said egg cup as two words, but they probably meant eggcup -- the little dish used to serve a soft-boiled egg. It would hold about 2 fluid ounces.

    young rabbits and veggies ?

There will never be 100% agreement on this question. When I started with rabbits in 2005, the 3-4 months rule seemed to prevail. This was before RabbitTalk and I hung out on another forum back then. I fed the adults dandelions, plantain, chicory and white clover in addition to the pellets and I...

musovy duck adventures--the history of Helga

Poor Helga! Our goose, Elsie, used to try bathing in her water bucket in winter. She seemed to have fun even then, but she much preferred a bit of a pond in a low-lying area or even a kid's wading pool.

Help! Sick rabbit no emergency vets

I've never used aspirin, but if you google aspirin for rabbits you'll find information. I think it should be safe since it is a similar substance to willow bark, but we have willow trees and I prefer to let rabbits self medicate if possible. If the rabbit were mine and was in a lot of pain, I...

Help! Sick rabbit no emergency vets

Good thought, MuddyFarms! At least with ear mites there are visible signs, so it's easy to check for. @L606 Are the ears clean inside or is there crusty, scabby gunk in there?

Help! Sick rabbit no emergency vets

Some people say wry neck can be cured. You might want to read on Barbi Brown's site. Since the rabbit is in pain, willow or aspirin should help it through the night. It can go to the vet's tomorrow for a diagnosis.

Help! Sick rabbit no emergency vets

I have no first hand experience of head tilt, but I have read a bit about it over the years. This site provides some information. https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/pet-health-hub/symptoms/head-tilt-in-a-rabbit This site is useful for treating head tilt ("wry neck") when it is caused...

    Kits covered in urine

Definitely for four or fewer kits -- they don't have enough body mass collectively to keep themselves warm in cold weather. A larger litter with plenty of pulled fur will normally be okay. A lot depends on the doe. Some are fanatics about pulling fur and covering the kits after nursing. Others...

    Kits covered in urine

KelleyBee, is the nest box placed in the corner of the cage where the doe usually potties? This can confuse her and lead to her urinating on the kits or other unusual places -- like the treat dish. Please do consider this possibility and shift the nest box if needed. It sounds to me as though...

    Grain fodder for Natural Feeding

New member, Everything is history, has posted about a DIY system for growing oat fodder from whole oats from the feed store. This is an excellent way of providing fresh greens for the rabbits over the winter. Not only does it save money, it provides superior nutrition for the buns. Rabbit oat...

    Rabbit oat fodder setup

Thanks for posting this, Everything is history. A very nice set-up to save money and provide your rabbits with first class natural fodder. This would be useful for poultry as well. When you have time, could you provide more details about daily routine and troubleshooting, temperatures, watering...

    Feeding orphans

Sorry you lost the doe and other kits. That really hurts. Your orphan looks quite plump, which should give him a better chance than some. Hope he makes it!

The New Safe Plants for Rabbits List

Keep them coming, folks, and I'll edit the list when I get a chance. @ladysown -- I don't know how I could have missed prickly lettuce! Thanks for the reminder.

The New Safe Plants for Rabbits List

I don't think it is an issue -- rabbits handle the thorns on blackberry bushes, rose bushes and thistles just fine. I used to take a 5 gallon bucket and pruning shears when I gathered greens. If the canes were very prickly, I sometimes just took the leaf clusters. If I wanted to include...

Are these rat droppings? Please advise and help!

They help, but both can vary in size. It's not essential, but I'd find it helpful.
