Rabbit Hutch/Cage Wire Size for FLOOR

Truthfully, the rabbits have chewed about 4 inches of coating on the walls in 2 years. That was early on. There has been no recent chewing. Zero chewing on the floor, ever. Now mind, I give them lots of stuff for tooth wear so they may just be disinclined from chewing wierd stuff. Galvanized...

The Loss Of A Kit And A Grudge Made Stronger

To understanding the cat a little more. unless mssr. Spotted Tabby was taught to eat his "kill" then all he was really doing was playing with Gaston. Alas! Cats and rabbits have different ideas about play time. Perhaps in effort to save future kits you could engage mssr. Tabby in learning what...

The New Safe Plants for Rabbits List

As we all are wont to say, scientific names. Are we talking Acer Rubum or Acer Palmatum? Palmatum or Japanese Maple is usually ornamental. Rubum, while very pretty isn't generally considered ornamental. That is the one that grows in my yard and is definitely rabbit edible. While not red, A...

    Lambsquarters (Chenopodium album): Article Link

I think it may like poor soil. Growing up is would grow about anywhere, but it was specially prevalent in the depleted farm field. If it likes where it is growing it can get to 5 to 6 feet tall. I just pulled the dead stalks of some 5 footers. The image on the linked site is definitely an...

    concerns with my rabbits??

It may be that it is spring time. Dosiedoe is off her pellets now that green food is available. She very much prefers fresh over pellet this time of year.

    Multiple Rabbit Discounts

So I just bought 3 rabbits from @KelleyBee . First rate experience BTW! I would never have asked her for a discount. The price is the price. I'll have to drive over an hour to get them. Hey, that is just part of my investment. I don't expect a discount. She has been gracious to offer to meet me...

    Jerusalem Artichoke for Rabbits

Strategic planting is they way I control them. I've planted along a fence. The opposite side of the fence is my wood pile, so they can't spread that way. Were they to try spreading away from the fence, they simply get mown down with the grass. A way to preserve them not yet covered is...

    yellow urine

It worries me a little that she is using metal for her teeth. I would first start introducing some hay. Maybe try fresh grass if she refuses dry hay. It will have more of the protein her digestive system is designed for as well as fiber. It will encourage the cutting, scissors like action with...

    New from Iowa

This thread is special to me for two things: 1) I feel kindred for having difficulty finding rabbit stock. I came here looking for a buck in Delaware. Who knew they would be so scarce? 2) I stayed because of the great sharing of information!

    Mystery plant!

I've toyed with the idea of proogating them into my garden scheme. I never seem to get out for them when they have gone to seed though. Yesterday I put out seed for bishop weed (Aegopodium podagraria) and wintercress (Barbarea vulgaris). I hope to get rugosa roses established this year. While...

    yellow urine

I don't see why a rabbit wouldn't be able to go diabetic. They have a liver and a pancreas after all. How would you check their A1C? Easy enough to check BGL, even if it would likely make the rabbit angry. In humans dark urine would indicate dehydration. It can also indicate electrolyte...

    Mystery plant!

The sting comes from histamine in the plant. The histamine denatures readily upon dehydration or heating. When I harvest it for the dinner table it is usually mid-summer. Kept in the hot car for a an hour or so makes it so that I can handle it without gloves. I wouldn't suggest you do the same...

    Cage wire size

For rat proofing you could add a layer of rat wire outside the rabbit friendly wire. Are rats really a problem? I would understand if the rabbits were on the ground. While rats can easily climb, the only "food" would be kits. I would think that momma would be sufficient defense? I don't have a...

    PVC Hutch Bottoms?

I have cross supports every 4 feet. Poultry staples aka fencing staples are heavy gauge U shaped staples that you hammer in. Each section has 2 stretches of wire joined using J clips. The framing is all 1.5" x 1.5" that I ripped from standard 2x4s.

    What do you grow?

Sunchokes Helianthus tuberosus is the only thing that I've planted deliberately for the rabbits. There is a lot of wild forage on my lot. The sunchokes are a favorite both fresh and dead/dry.

The New Safe Plants for Rabbits List

An update on sunchokes, jerusalem atichokes, Helianthus tuberosus. On a whim I cut some dead stalks with dry blackened leaves and put them in the hutch thinking the rabbits might like to chew on something. Wow! Dosiedoe went at them in preference to her pellets! She ate the leaves and the stalks...

    Treated wood for bottom -

Once upon a time wood was treated against termites and fungus using arsenic. Those days are gone. Modern treatment is with copper sulfide. Still not something you want your rabbits eating daily, but much less inimical to health. Not only did I use treated lumber in the hutch, both where rabbits...

    Cage wire size

Truthfully I can't say. After 1 year there is not much build up. Once the weather warms I will do some cleaning. The manure classifier underneath is bare metal. It has much more build up, but it is also only 1/4 mesh.

One long cage with dividers or seperate

For hanging cages I would go with separate for the reasons given by @MuddyFarms . For a hutch, I am having success with one long hutch with dividers. I put doors in the dividers so I can expand sections for more room or segregate as needed.
