To scruff or not to scruff?

I put the bag down open, put one hand across shoulders to restrain, the other under their bottom holding their hind legs. And lift in then flip bag up. Or try to. My goal is to have them laying flat in the bottom. They have gone in head first then I move the pillow case around to reposition. I...

To scruff or not to scruff?

I'm pretty new too. I have found I like to use an old flannel pillow case to move them. One hand holding the bag, the other arm supports the weight from underneath. They seem to calm down when heads are covered. Not to breeding yet, but moving them to a temporary exercise space. Worked good when...

    Rabbits or not

We don't get many dandelions in the north woods, but my garden is full of lamb's quarters, wood sorrel, sheep Sorrel, violets, violas, daisy, purslane, mint, dill, clover, strawberry, calendula, bee balm, lemon balm, thyme, garlic, horseradish... We too eat them all. The rabbits seem to relish...

    Rabbits or not

Reflections of a newbie.. finally got my rabbits. Been dreaming and planning for a long time. Sandy soil, short growing season, my gardens need all the help they can get. Some good meat I can trust will be another bonus. I have learned much I used to weed out is more nutritious than much we...

    Questions on starting new colony.

Thanks for your time. The young horny toad is in a small cage by himself. Put it next to so they can see each other. 1/4" hardware cloth between. Hopefully it won't take long to do the shed. Then he can have the big tractor. Momma's and kits the shed. I swear he's pissed. Glared at me a long...

    Questions on starting new colony.

Newbie here. Just got my first rabbits one week ago. A trio of silver fox. Want to try a colony. The book I bought on colony raising said start them together young. They are currently in a tractor type set up as I build my larger shed and run. It is roughly 4x10, has an insulated box at one end...

    I'm making a rabbit pie...

Yep, sounds great! We don't seem to have many dandelions in the north woods. I've had to learn to adjust. I am looking forward to trying the pie recipe.

    I'm making a rabbit pie...

Sounds yummy. Hope to try in the future. With those kinds of stew stuff I like to give the meat a few minutes in the pressure cooker to tenderize before adding veggies. Or a few hours on the wood stove. Think a salad with lots of the wild edibles that the rabbits eat added would be good side...

Natural Feed - Drying Forage for Winter

Wheat sprouts great in a jar, I used to do them right next to my mung beans, and gets almost sweet. I assume most grains would as long as not kiln dried.

    Beyond the Pellet

Thanks! You are doing what I hope to work towards. I'm setting up for my first rabbits. Bought the book beyond the pellet a few years ago. And Dana's book on colony raising. Our "lawn" is mix of several grasses ,clovers, violets, viola, lots of thyme, wild strawberry..have been planting many...

    Home use Pellet Mills

I'm curious why one would want to make pellets instead of just feeding the greens? Not criticizing, I'm a newbie and just trying to understand.

    Lambsquarters (Chenopodium album): Article Link

Mine was only 4' tall, but I kept pinching it, we eat it all summer, and I steamed and froze for winter greens. I let some go to seed for next year's crop. It will reseed itself. But for me that's a plus. The smaller ones pull easy if you get too many. I let my garden be kind of wild. With lambs...

Post regret after first time dispatching/butchering (graphic images)

I am glad you enjoyed your rabbit. Both in the care you gave and on the dinner plate.please remember the animals you raise will have a better life than those coming from massive factory farms, or even a wild animal always under stress of food shortage or predation. And better nutrition for you...

    Lambsquarters (Chenopodium album): Article Link

I bought seeds for an "improved" variety, magenta spreen, from pine tree. The iridescent on this one is hot pink. Looks like some one spritzed it with hot pink paint. Very ornamental and bigger leaves. I kept pinching tips (for me) until looked like a 4' Xmas tree. I let some go to seed for...
