Anyone working on mini rex X holland lops?

Plush Lops are a recognised breed in Australia and the UK.

    First time mom

I hope you can manage to build her up, as by the time the litter is 3 weeks old they will really be draining her. That's when I'd expect a doe to lose condition, if she does.

    Preparing for summer weather

They can still help - you'd need some ice in front of them to cool down the air. Otherwise you're just stirring around hot air for no benefit. Frozen bottles of water or frozen ceramic tiles for each hutch/cage would be better. Even if the rabbits don't sit or lie on them they will help to bring...

    Preparing for summer weather

The reason fans work for us is that we sweat all over our bodies, and the air from the fan evaporates it, cooling us down. Rabbits don't sweat, so it will be of limited value.

Tricolour to tricolour should be tri (from experience) but....

They just vary. Personally in Harlie/Tri Dutch breeding I prefer the dark ones over the lightly marked ones for breeding, as they seem to be less common. You can put a dark one to a light one to hopefully even out the colour distribution.

    Interesting kit colour - help?

Yes that'll be a sable frosty - you also have sable agoutis there and a siamese sable. To use BRC terms as you're in New Zealand which follows British Rabbit Council standards, it's a frosty point (unstandardised), and agouti sable/sable agouti (also unst).

Is there a market for rabbits?

They probably wouldn't! But reputation is all, especially these days with the internet where word can get round faster than the speed of light. You might even find yourself competing for sales with other breeders in your area.

Is there a market for rabbits?

Check the laws on deposits in your area. There were a few cases here in the UK during Covid where people had paid a deposit on puppies, then the breeders changed their minds, returned the deposits and declined to sell. It was decided in court that accepting a deposit was a contract of sale, so...

Is there a market for rabbits?

I agree with this. It can be a real hassle selling direct - people don't turn up, or they bring the whole family including 6 kids and both sets of grandparents, argue over price, fail to bring a suitable carrier or box with them, stay too long, change their minds, can't make up their minds, or...

    Cage height question

Yes be careful with the wavy roof stuff. The gaps between waves could allow rats to gain access unless you plan carefully and add a layer of wire below.

    What color is this doe?

She's an agouti sable - agouti, A, plus the shaded gene c(chl). It's sometimes called Sable Chinchilla, but it's made by the shaded gene rather than the one that creates true chinchilla. BTW - it's either Siamese Sable or Sable Marten, not both. Siamese Sable has no white markings; Sable Marten...

Hi, I am Julia from the UK, I am happy to have found Rabbit Talk.

I have had this happen before, twice - in each case the doe produced a premature dead baby, then went on to kindle a healthy litter on the due date. I don't know why it occurs, but a large (in number) litter may be the case. One of my breeds is very small (1kg adult weight) so they have small...

    Help with genotype

We have chocolate agouti recognised in quite a few breeds in the UK, where it's called Cinnamon: Angora (English), Netherland Dwarf, Polish (US Brit), most Lop breeds, Satin, Rex and Mini Rex. Description of the base colour varies in the different standards: slate, light blue, dove grey, lilac.

    Help with genotype

On short-haired (non-Angora) rabbits, chocolate agouti has a slate blue base colour next to the skin.

    Help with genotype

What is the undercolour on the 'red' one like? It could potentially be chocolate agouti if it's not red.

    Beginner at breeding

The Dwarf gene is dominant, so only needs one copy. This works for all breeds where the Dwarf gene is present - Hollands, Netherlands, Mini Rex etc. DW/DW is non-dwarf (oversized). DD/dw is the 'show size' i.e. expected size within weight for the breed. dw/dw is 'peanut'. When you breed DW/dw...

Interesting colors from mixing my fiber line with the REW meat line

You have Harlequinised chestnut/brown grey/agouti there (whatever the colour is called in your breed/s). It will be A_ Ee(j).

    Anybody feeding acorns

The study refers to Quercus pubescens, which is the Italian Oak native to southern Europe and southwest Asia. I don't know if acorns from other species are safe to feed - the acorns of Quercus robur, the Pedunculate Oak are poisonous for most animals [except pigs] and particularly horses, which...

    Side Entry Nest Box

That's another advantage to this kind of nest box. The doe has somewhere to rest away from the babies, or just jump up for exercise. In Sweden, it's law for every rabbit hutch to have a shelf or box for jumping. I'm not in Sweden but have taken this on board and now most of mine have the same...

    Side Entry Nest Box

They do like snug. The nest burrow of a wild Oryctolagus cuniculus (European wild rabbit - ancestor of domestics) is about 2ft long, with a small chamber at the end not much bigger than the doe herself.
