Try hedgehogs at $100 an offspring with a risk the female will abandon or kill them if you stress her before or 2-4weeks after. We just put cinni in her birthing cage with an igloo covered in a tshirt and plenty of bedding for nesting in. Her first due date is the 6th. She's looking quite round.

I hope it works out for you and you have to post baby pics! Baby hedgies have to be the cutest things out there!

wow i never heard of hedgie raising before how did you find one and do you plan to eat them like people would living on the road?

One of my previous coworkers has a pet hedgehog, she had to wait 6mos on a list just to get the guy.

Oh gosh, that would be stressful! I worked at an exotic pet store once and we bought some adorable hedgehogs with the intent of rehoming them...well...one was pregnant and she had them right in the cage, middle of the day, with an audience. Luckily she seemed to be a veteran mama.

At $100 dollars each, they'd be an expensive meal. In North America, hedgehogs are considered exotic pets. I know they are considered wildlife in Europe and I've heard of people wrapping them in clay and baking them. The spines are supposed to come off when the clay is cracked open. The meat is said to be very good.

Those are european hedgehogs. Entirely different species. Different personality. Different size. It's thought by many that we shouldn't even keep african hedgehogs compared to euroopean because they are so close to wild still. You could handle a wild european hedgie but it takes a hedgie bred from captivity handled every day to tame an african hedgie. Some never tame and always remain grumpy balls of quills. We can't get european hedgies here though for some reason. Hedgehogs here are a rare pet costing $100-$300 and there are no wild ones.

We have hoglets but we don't get to see them for 2 weeks because unlike rabbits hedgehogs are very protective of their young until they come out of the nest on their own.

Chinchillas have a 111 day gestation period and have 2 lil ones to a litter so when your having trouble waiting on hedgies just remember it could be worse!
I would love to see some pics of your hedgehogs.

I'm still waiting on a cornsnake to lay her eggs, her 1st lock up with the male was in December! Then 55-60 days for them to hatch... lol

It helps to paitent. I hope the baby hoggies are doing good and I hope they come out soon so we can see pics :)

Little hoglets soon. My husband caught one out feeding off mom and said it was cream colored. They were just squeaking in protest at the noise I was making cleaning the guinea pig cages. They should come out soon but we may have to ambush them in the middle of the night until their nest can be removed. Problem with a nocturnal pet.

We've decided cinni is purposely refusing to let them out of the nest so they don't get exposed to people and dogs. Last night she was laying on the tunnel out of the nest and wouldn't move. She can't keep it up forever.

__________ Sat Mar 30, 2013 11:19 am __________

We were worried something had happened to the babies since they should have been out last week so I opened the nest and then couldn't resist stealing one. Which wasn't so easy with a big ball of angry mother hedgehog huffing and popping her quills in whatever direction I tried to reach. Finally with the help of a tshirt I got this
