I seen Youtube videos that Wheat Grass is a Super food and seems easy to grow and is beneficial for people. Is it beneficial for rabbits/meat rabbits? Is it as good for the rabbits as in timothy hay?

I don't know, but years ago my brother found 4 cottontails that had their nest messed up and brought them in the house. They were syringe fed milk a few days and I started pulling wheat and putting it in their cage and they would eat all of it. They looked great and I turned them loose when they were big enough.

I've found it very beneficial for my rabbits. Always have a supply of it growing here. Very easy to grow. Trace minerals help their immune system plus it's a stimulate for them to eat. It's the first green my young bunnies get. I start at 7 weeks old. Also helped my Neville when he was ill to keep eating. All my rabbits really enjoy Wheat grass and as soon as they are done, they immediately start eating their hay.

Wheat grass is excellent for rabbits and poultry too. I grow it in dollar store rectangular dishpans in winter for the rabbits. I usually get two cuttings from each planting.

Another question- Since it is good for people and rabbits. Where do you buy the seeds to grow them? Now can you use the wheat grass instead of timothy hay? I been trying to track down timothy hay or the seeds but seems here in arizona its mostly alfalfa.

No offence, Karen, but those prices are crazy! Why not just grow it using wheat from the health food store or even a feed store?

5 lbs at $11.50. Not crazy about the health food stores in my area. Product stays around too long. And don't have really many feed stores in the area. Plus no feed store carries Non-genetically altered wheat grass seeds. I will not participate in GM. Sorry, know enough that I don't need a pre-destined seed.

I do see your point about the non-GM seed. I don't know if you have land to work with, but if you do you might consider growing some of that expensive wheat seed and harvesting your own wheat. It would soon pay off.

Who woulda thunk it? With all the winter wheat we have grown around here, one would think that a breeder living in this community would have thought to ask a farmer if he could bag up some of it versus paying for hay all year round, right?

I bought a bucket and a "gamma lid" to put on the bucket to keep it fresh and critter free while I use it up. Best deal around if you can't buy a 50lb bag of NON-GMO locally.

For a local tip try checking with the local Mormom (LDS) church. All Mormon churches have granaries for their members but most will let others buy from them since the more the move the cheaper they get it.

Wish I did have land. Live in a small community of single family dwellings. All different, not cookie cutter. So have to get my seeds somewhere. Have been harvesting other seeds though. Like Dandelion, tomato, peppers, beans. So really a worthy expense in our opinion. Have a supply of something that I know is clean and good for my bunnies. Jake likes it too.
