I just got my first litter of broken FA. :)

Most in the litter are what I have seen called "blanket patterned", but one has more of a strip of splattered color along the back. Are the different types of broken inherited, or just luck of the draw? I rather like the look of the blanket pattern better than the "spilled my coffee on my bun" look.

All I know is that Charlie needs two copies (there is only one in my pairing) and broken needs just one to display itself. Anything more I should know about breeding nice brokens?

There are modifiers that effect how the broken gene will effect a a rabbit but they are not well understood and "a luck of the draw" ;)

However,

These modifiers are inherited so a rabbit that has a "booted broken" pattern is more likely to produce booted broken kits and a rabbit that has a splotchy pattern more like a cow will more likely have kits with this pattern and a bun that has an "English Spot" pattern is more likely to pass this on to it offspring

It is impossible to tell what broken modifiers a solid rabbit has and unless it has broken parents or siblings that can give an indication of what pattern it will produce when crossed to a broken, there is no way to know what will pop up in the nest box

That's cool! I am really loving those little butterflies over the nose. My new broken buck appears to be CC, so now all my REWs will display their true colors.

In my broken NZR litter, I've got blanket patterns, a white with a "coffee drip" down it's back, a bunch of reds with blazes and whited front legs, and a white with a roan pattern on it's back. I know the does mom is spotted like an Appaloosa and the dad has the blanket pattern. The dad of the litter is the product of a solid and a broken, so he passed ENen, whereas the the mom has ENEN. I'm loving the brokens.....

Those sound fun.

Well, I just bred another REW doe with this broken buck. But, looking at her pedigree, she could be broken herself under that white. I may get to see Charlies, I guess.

Just a note on broken patterns and showing rabbits; often times the colored fur and the white have a different texture, so the blanket patterns are preferred if fur texture is a source of lots of points.

My personal preference is for the lightly marked butterfly (?) pattern, but on the show table (especially with Satins) the difference in texture is very noticeable, so the blanketed rabbits do better.

Hey, MSD!! Could you add those observations to this thread too?

Interesting!
Our Hlops and photos I have seen are different that what I see in say, mini Rex where there seems to be a lot of the line down the spine, same with broken NZs.
