What is the difference?! (Genetically too, please!)

I'm sorry if this questions has been asked before, but it has really been bugging me...

What is the difference between a Harlequin and a Magpie?!

What is genetically different about the two? I know that a tri is a broken harli, but what is a magpie? :?


I prefer working with self and shaded colors but this one has always had me wondering!

harli and magpie are both ej - either eje, or ejej.

Magpies have cchd though, which gets rid of the fawn/orange colour, and replaces it with white.

Harlequin - A_B_C_D_ej_ (for tri, there's also an En)
Magpie - A_B_cchd_D_ej_

A true showable magpie is a chinchilla with two Japanese harliquin genes (ejej) or a Japanese and a non extension (eje)

Harlequin is recognized in black, chocolate, blue and lilac which is misleading since they genetically should be agouti, chocolate agouti, opal and lynx with the Japanese harlequin gene.

Even when paired with the full extension the harli gene (Eej) can wreak havoc and cause subtle darker areas in an agouti rabbit and when paired with steel (ESej) it supposedly makes an agouti rabbit black!

Sorry for going off topic a bit, I just got a litter of mis-marked harliquin carrying kits that threw me for a loop.

My agoutis carry harlie, especially the booted broken castor mini Rex I just sold. They have the markings on their ears and underbelly, brindling. Unfortunately, no one in the herd carries ee, and so no tris

I have been working almost exclusively with shaded bunnies, so I love every bit of color genetics information that I can get!

Another question!

Will the harli gene mess up my breedings of chocolate and shaded bunnies? Sorry, Unsure of exactly how that gene affects the others that I work with...

Not necessary the chocolate, but it may interact with the shaded.

It should not effect any self and full extension based rabbits so your chocolates will look fine BUT they can be carriers and it can crop up if bred to other colours.

It will mess up the shaded. Many of the magpies out there are shaded ( cchl _ & ej_ ) and look greyish sepia and creamy white and not chinchilla (cchd_ & ej _) which look bright white and clean grey agouti.

What will it mess up on the shadeds? Will it mess up any seal, tort, sable point colors, or just the agouti colors?

It messes up tort and sable point, and I would assume it would mess up seal but it may be hard to see since seals are so dark.

The middle picture is a harlequinized tort, harlequin (fawn harli) and tri (Broken fawn harli)It is tricky to tell the tort from the true harli but the colour is more faded or washed out looking.

The last is a chestnut (A_ & Eej) I also got chinchilla coloured kits with the two tone brindling effect (A_ cchd_ Eej)
