I'm heading into a tri color program with my Hollands, with my goal (long-term) being for competitive Tri's and Tri Carriers. And I want Harlequins...I LOVE harlequins :D

But I am VERY limited with my bloodlines. Like, everyone goes back to one Harlequin buck. So I need to find a buck in a color that will help me out.

So:
what are some colors that let harlequins and tri's show?
What colors are recessive to harlequin/tri?
What colors are dominant over those two?
What colors could I bring in and breed with to strengthen my line and bring in new blood?

Harlequin and tri (broken harlequin) is pretty dominant except on the E-locus so breeding to torts and sable points should produce more harlequins but as stated you could get self based instead of agouti based harlequin and tri

If you breed to red/fawn/orange or frosty, which are agouti based, you are less likely to get torted harli and tri

If the opal carries harlequin or non-extension you could get tri's or booted tris. If they don't, you won't get any. You could however get harlequinized chestnuts. There are other possiblites but it all depends on what, if any, recessives the tri carries and opal carry (you know the opal is dd).

The only breed that recognizes harlequin as a showable variety is the Harlequin breed, which allows both Japanese and magpies.

Tris are showable in several breeds, but I would have to go look through my SoP to remember which ones. Mini rex is the only one I am sure about off the top of my head.
