Holy cow! Just when I think I'm getting this ...

__________ Fri Dec 14, 2012 4:31 pm __________

How do I know if it is Sable Point or Blue Point? I am considering keeping this one and growing it out.

It'll turn darker black or lighter blue called smoke pearl because of the look depending on what it is. Sable point is just the basic name for the black based version. Smoke pearl is usually what you call the blue version rather than blue point.

According to Glenna Huffmon's genetic books, there is a difference between a smoke pearl and a blue point. A blue point has an almost cream body with of course, blue points, whereas a smoke pearl has a light blue/gray body with darker points. I believe the kit in question is actually a blue point, but I'm no expert! :)

I am going to have to get some new pics. I noticed just today that she is starting to get some creamy marbling on her white coat. She really is getting pretty. I also sexed her and am pretty sure she is a doe. If she is, I will grow her out. I have another one from her litter that I want to grow out too if it is a doe.

__________ Sun Dec 16, 2012 7:54 pm __________

Also, it looks like she has gray/blue eyes.

You did not know the D locus of your rabbits so if this kit is a blue both his father and mother carry a dilute and have the genotype "Dd", just one more piece of the puzzle.

I know :D I was just telling my dh that very thing last night.

__________ Wed Dec 19, 2012 3:55 pm __________

I am not happy with the quality of pictures I got. It was in the 20's and I was doing morning chores. The snow really washed the pictures out. Hopefully I can get some better ones another day.

Here is the Sable Point/Blue Point

Her eyes aren't that blue irl, but def a gray/blue.

Here is an updated picture of the dam-Fern. She's still molting. This is her first litter.

The kit certainly looks like a blue point, especially with that ghostly grey eye. I am very surprised your rabbits had one hiding in them as blue is not a common colour in meat breeds. Could you remind us what breeds the lady you got the sire and dam had in her colony?

She had Californian, Checkered Giant, a Black Satin line, a Palomino line. I also know she bred in some Silver Martens. That's all I can think of right now. I will double check with dh to see if I missed any. The sire was a Palomino and the dam was the Black Tort that I posted.

I may have been from the checkered giants, they only come in two colours, black and blue. If she had any that lacked the broken pattern she may have crossed them into the other self lines. I don't know how common blue cali's are but they too can have the gene.

I have learned that lighter coloured Palomino are blue (dd) , non extension 'ee'. agouti's 'A_' so your buck could have this genotype or only carry one of the blue genes.
