Hi there! So I breed American chinchillas and just for the sake of having a meat litter that is a bit different, we're breeding to a Rex buck in hope we get some interesting colored kits, rather then having them look all the same...

Anyways, my friend has a buck and I can't tell if he is a Broken Blue or a Broken Lilac.

Also, I did some research and found an article that says this is the Am chin genotype:

A_ B_ CchdCchd D_ E_

Here is a picture of the buck: (attached)

With This info, what color kits do you think we'll get?

Thanks!

I don't know, but I've been told that it matters what color the inside of their ears are... light or dark?
My buck has longer hair but his gray looks very similar, with that faint tan sheen to it. My buck also has partial white eye circles, yours does not.

The buck is a broken blue

You will likely just get chestnuts and broken chestnuts, you might get chinchilla and broken chinchilla. I doubt you'd get steel as that colour is VERY rare in rex.

Do you have any info on the colour of the Rex's parents, siblings or kits he's produced?

As for your AmChins - have you ever gotten any colours other than chinchilla?

I have AmChins as well and my original trio were "AA BB cchdcchd DD EE" and only produced chinchilla coloured kits - my next pair added all sorts of weird and I started getting blacks, REW and frosties :)

We have never gotten anything other then Chin with my Am Chins, and we've had them for several years and generations.

Also, what us a "frosty"?

I contacted the breeder about the bucks parents :)

Genetically it is a chinchilla'd red rabbit and looks like a VERY light, almost white, rabbit with dark eyes and black tips on the fur, hence the name "frosty"

I don't keep them in my meat buns but here is a frosty coloured Mini Lop that is sable based instead of chinchilla so it is a bit more brown than black

The bucks owner said that he has Broken Blacks and Broken Blues in his pedigree.

Thank you! I'll let you know what we get! So excited!

One last thing, what color would you suggest we breed to the Chin to get the most variety?

Your AmChins don't carry any recessives so no matter what you breed to them you'll only get chestnuts.

However, if you breed to a sable point or lilac and keep the kits back and breed them back to the non-chin parent you will get a wide variety of colours in the litters.

If you breed an am chin to a steel mutt who carries rew or himi (half NZW or Cali is a good way to make sure) you could get silver and gold tipped steels as well as the chestnuts.

That works because steel is actually visually dominant to chestnut, and rew or himi is recessive to chinchilla.

Wow, okay thank you for all this info! What are the chances of inheriting the Broken coloration?
