Yeah, pretty nutty, huh? (Or were you talking about my mini-rant above? :hmm:  )funnies50":1zcgd6u7 said:Wow. Who knew people could get so worked up over things...
You're welcome!funnies50":1zcgd6u7 said:And I totally understand the stress you had with a 'pet only' person next door!
Thanks, Miss M.
She actually wandered over one day while we were building our rabbitry. The kids pulled her over to the patio, where our rabbits were living in cramped (but sufficient) conditions while we built (we had just moved in with my uncle). I was silently horrified as they showed her our bunnies, and this was before I knew about the dog rescue and humane society. After she had a chance to see them -- one buck, one doe, and a litter of 8 -- I pulled her into the back yard so she could see the nice, spacious rabbitry we were building. I was afraid she'd call somebody if I didn't. So she knew we had rabbits and that we were keeping them outside.
I remember seeing all these nice American Elm (Ulmus americana) trimmings in her yard some time later, and I couldn't resist. I walked over and asked if I could take some for the rabbits. She said sure, I could have all I wanted. Then she asked me about the litter she had seen. Had we sold them as pets? I must have looked like a deer in the headlights. I told her the truth, that we had raised them for meat. She looked stricken. I hurriedly begged, "Look, we don't want to cause any trouble... we just don't have a lot of money, and this is how we provide some of the meat for our family... we just can't afford a lot of the meat at the store..."
You know, after processing what I had said, she actually asked me about the flavor and texture of rabbit meat, and finally said that sometime she might be interested in trying it in a dish, as long as she could not identify it.   I couldn't believe my ears! I grabbed a bunch of elm, tucked it behind the fig tree, and quietly had a nervous breakdown. We never spoke again (not because she was angry with us, but just because that was pretty typical of the neighborhood), and she never called rescue on us. I wasn't about to remind her about the rabbits by taking some fricassee over there. :x I was so glad to move to the country!
Okay, now I have thoroughly derailed this thread...
