...but I seem to have contracted the Small Breeditis form of Rabbitosis. After all my going on about not seeing what others see in the little guys, I'm rather smitten with a small breed. I saw a friends Polish at the show at the end of November and I'm thinking I may need to add some to my herd.

So....what can you guys tell me about Polish that isn't in the SOP?

polish, polish, polish, polish... :)

They are sweet, adorable little critters that rarely if ever growl or show poor behaviour.
I find I can foster anything to them and they are cool with that.
they make for good momma 99% of the time.
They run the gambit from a bit standoffish to in your face friendly.

I love 'em. :)

How common is the dwarf gene in the breed? From what I understand they're supposed the be a miniature not a dwarf, I'd rather not deal with peanuts if I can avoid it.

Polish are not supposed to have the dwarf breed, but they do, a lot of them have been interbred with Netherlands Dwarf rabbits. Your best bet is to ask the breeder you buy from if they have had peanuts, as well as pay attention to the face shape - a shorter, blunter, rounder face is usually a sign of the dwarf gene.

That won't be hard to avoid then, I don't care for the blunt Nethie face

What's average litter size, two? four? more? Not concerned, curious. I have a whole six cages for small guys.

I can't really speak for average litter size, as my average, biggest and smallest polish litters are all the same - I've only had one born here, and it is 5 kits. I got my Polish from Ladysown, though. I think the buck is a dwarf, and the doe is not.

This is Rufus, my buck. You can see why I think he has the dwarf gene, lol.

Mwa-ha-ha-ha-haaahhhh!!!

It was only a matter of time!

I'm interested in this thread as well, since Queenpup wants a little bunny as a house rabbit, and the Polish seem to fit the bill. :)

Pet quality netherlands paid our feed bill about half the year. We never went to enough shows to really sell our larger breeds and most culls ended up dog food because we had no market for them. The netherlands sold for 1/2 to 3/4ths of the year though. Nov-Dec especially for christmas and then easter plus a few 4hers looking for a cheap project and pets before the may deadline. We kept 2 netherland bucks and one mini rex cross as pets out of all our 60 rabbits we sold off the end of this year.

Do not feel badly !!! After years of the Palominos... my heart was snagged by JW pictures that were here on RT ( by Lindsey's Woolies). I was able to locate some and they are soooooo stinkin Cute !!! Now a good portion of our barn is the little critters ! :/

I've seen my friends Polish few times before but for some reason they just caught my eye this time.

Ya that was before the rabbitosis set in! ;D

average litter size.. 2-7 most with 3. bigger litters if you breed back sooner.

peanuts happen.. they really do even though they shouldn't. Some folks cull it hard out of their lines, others go.. peanuts happen. I am one of the latter. If I culled hard for it I would say 90% of my herd would be gone. The more I use my own lines, the less likely I am to get peanuts though. Probably because I'm getting farther away from my original stock much of which came from a fellow who I know fudged his pedigrees.

What I've learned is...bigger does tend not to have them, smaller does will REGARDLESS of the buck used.

I think they are cute! I'm not as familiar with the breed, since I don't know anyone with them, but I've heard nothing but good things. I've heard they are great for kids. There sure were some pretty ones at convention!

I really like the looks of the ones on the club site, I may be looking for a while to find something I like.
Not a bad thing really, it gives me more time to get everything set up the way I want and get things going with the SF as well. I should 'probably' get a little more experience with my newest breed before adding another :)
