wasting hay

I think hay is a critical part of the diet when the young are switching from Mama's milk to solid food/pellets. The extra fiber, which is natural fiber, lessens the possibility of the young developing digestive problems.

Although the young are very wasteful, the benefits far outweigh the downside of them having problems.

Grumpy.

So true grumpy. I start giving some hay when they are 2 weeks old in the nesting box. Then on the floor at 3 weeks old because they cant get up high enough in the hay rack. Then by 4 weeks they are eating out of the hay rack. THen the mess really starts.I am starting to feed less hay in there so it is more loosly. I am hoping that will help some.

I picked up some suet feeders for $1.99 each in the bird food aisle, stuffed them with hay and hung them in the cages. So far it's going pretty well. Getting the hay out of them is a bit of a puzzle, but it's possible for the bunnies to empty them with a little determination, and I think they are wasting less (maybe?). It's also pretty cute to see them nuzzling them around and getting bonked on the head. The only bummer to this that the ones I got have this vinyl coating on the wire. I'll have to take them out if the bunnies get a taste for that.
