I brought a couple of black Jr. Does to the show today for a prospective buyer who has been in mini-rex but has just gotten into Standard Rex. We had spoken on the phone, and he knows I am new to showing rabbits, and I told him that one of my primary reasons for showing was to get professional evaluations of my stock.
One 10 week +/- doe was entered in the show, as she had reached 4 pounds, and the other was only 8 weeks old and hadn't reached weight, but was the 2nd best black doe of her litter (I kept my first pick home). He posed them both, and decided he liked the 8wk old better.
Then he flipped her over and groaned "Oh no, see here where her belly button is? She has a white spot- that happens sometimes in mini-rex, and is a DQ, so she couldn't be shown..." I looked, and she had no white hairs that I could see, so I pulled out my very bright LED flashlight and shone it on the area. "Well, see, it is kind of gray" he says. I pulled out the other Jr. doe, and some of my older blacks, and didn't notice any difference. "Well, maybe standard Rex can outgrow it" says he. I suspected he was trying to get a discounted price, so I told him that in good conscience I couldn't sell an animal with a DQ, and that hopefully I would have something better to offer in the future.
I will post pics of the bunny-belly in question, but likely not until Monday at the earliest since we will be gone tomorrow... but I think this fellow was trying to swindle me out of a good rabbit.
