A friend of mine is wondering if she can feed walnuts and hazelnuts to her rabbits.

I have wondered this myself- if they were in the shell, I think they would be a fun "toy" as well.

I know peanuts are ok,
I read some where that walnuts are poisonous,
Not sure about Hazelnuts :)

Hazel and Walnuts are toxic if not roasted or soaked.

The fleshy casing around walnuts fresh off the tree is mildly toxic and a rabbit won't 'skin' them like a squirrel would.

Really? For people as well? These are store-bought nuts that have been in her pantry too long.

Thanks for questioning me MS, I double checked and I made a mistake, it's raw almonds that are very toxic.

Hazelnuts are safe to eat raw.

Raw walnuts have enzyme inhibitors that roasting and soaking (8hours) denature or flush out. They taste bitter and can cause digestive up set but won't kill you.

Unless you have a tree and harvest your own it is hard to get raw nuts and nuts sold by stores are almost always roasted or blanched to improve flavour and remove harmful compounds.

Whew! I was questioning the accuracy of Jean Aeul, authoress of The Clan of the Cave Bear, et al. Ayla loved young raw hazelnuts!

Good to know about the almonds though. We have a young almond tree, and I did not know that.

I was wondering about walnuts as well. I get them sometimes for the chickens because of the extra protein, but was afraid to give them to the rabbits. Only thing is...I dunno if the ones I have need to be soaked or roasted! I got the ones from the bulk bin at Sprouts...they're ready to eat as is or add to baking. DH loves to add them to his oatmeal as well.

When I say 'raw' I mean picked fresh off a tree.

Anything thing you get at a store for human consumption will be roasted or blanched since raw nuts tend to be bitter. In nature, these bitter compounds and enzymes help the seed last until spring without going rancid or sprouting too soon.

I have several black walnut trees on my proprty as well as hickory, butternut, and oak and our tamworth hogs love to go into the wood lot and clean up the nuts in the fall with out any negative effects, but I don't know if they are picking and choosing what to eat. When we harvest for ourselves we always roast them on the woodburning stove, just enough to get the shell to crack open, and eat the still moist nut meat but they do not store well unless raw or roasted until they are dry and crunchy.

Dood, are you willing to mail off Walnuts for sprouting purposes? Buying young trees here is kinda cost prohibitive!!
