I bred my harle FG cross doe to my purebred lilac Standard Rex buck.
Thought we might get some pretty mutts... *12* chestnuts

They are now 3 weeks old, and I know that the first generation cross won't give you rex coats.
Breeding a daughter back to the rex buck could produce rex coats.
Which I may try just for kicks.

I have noticed two coats types in the litter.
Normal coats, and some that are not full rex, but definitely have a plusher appearance and shorter guard hairs.
You can especially see this around the faces of the rexy ones, they look more rex because you see the definition due to the hair type.
It also shifts and stands like pile vs. typical flat coat.

Not sure if these pics help at all!

So... is this evidence of anything?
Should I choose one of these to keep and breed back to the sire for rex coated mutts?
They would *all* carry a rex gene from their sire, so incomplete dominance doesn't really follow since not all have this in between coat texture.
I *know* some of you know what this is all about... will you please fill me in?

From what I have seen of the way the girl who bred the doe's mother operates, my FG crosses could have *no* FG and a little parakeet mixed in ;)
But these gals are great brood does! LOL

I'll try and get better pics!
Those darn modifiers... still on my list of things to learn about ;)

__________ Sun Sep 20, 2015 9:46 pm __________

UPDATE-- they do indeed have curly whiskers!
So....
-- my doe could be carrying a Rex gene (Her line just keeps getting muddier)
-- they can't turn up Rex coated from only sire's gene, or could he contribute modifiers that help it bust thru on carriers?
I understood it to be a simple recessive that they do or don't have, while modifiers will affect quality?

So if I want Rex coated mutts, a daughter with Rex fur back to her site will give 100% rexed right?

Sounds like shes got a rex gene :x

Correct, Rex bred to Rex can only produce Rex

BUT

Because of those modifiers they likely won't be show quality and I can tell already tell that they have way too many guard hairs and not enough density :( building them up to an even half descent Rex coat will take many generations but you can fill your freezer in the meantime :)

Floofies! :D

These guys are heading to camp, I'm just playing around!
It is interesting that the interplay of modifiers can affect the coat, aside from its genotype.
